I am using Netbeans to develop a simple Java Swing app. It is to load in a text http://www.java2s.com/Code/Java/Swing-JFC/DisplayerrormessagedialogwithJOptionPaneERRORMESSAGE.htm file, then run calculation based on the numbers found in the text file. The main Swing class holds the JFrames and JPanels. I have the file loading code as a separate class file. It returns the number of lines read and a List of numbers back to the main Swing app. I realised that if the file reading fails (i.e. try -> catch (Exception ex)), the entire app will crash. What's the best way to handle errors resulting from my scenario above? That http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11563555/error-messages-with-java-swing is to say, the file loading code crashes and I don't want the entire program to crash. I want the program to say the file is corrupted and wait for user to load new file. Any thoughts? Please select a new file."); Then display the file dialog again. It's probably best to do this as a loop that continues while the the file is not valid. If there is a corruption, then rather than throwing an exception, set a boolean flag and loop as long as the flag is set. That way, when a good file is found, the while loop will terminate. Example: public static void main(String[] args){ boolean goodFile = false; while (!goodFile){ JFileChooser chooser = new JFileChooser(); chooser.showOpenDialog(); goodFile = processFile(chooser.getSelectedFile()); } } private boolean processFile(File file){ //do you stuff with the file //return true if the processing works properly, and false otherwise } share|improve this answer edited Jul 19 '12 at 15:07 answered Jul 19 '12 at 14:59 ewok 5,1201556124 2 Something like this is probably the best option, generally. +1 –Radu Murzea Jul 19

What's the question? –Dave Newton Nov 4 '11 at 23:40 1 Instead of error, try, e.getMessage() –Kumar Bibek Nov 4 '11 at 23:46 ^this will give the Exception object's toString, which probably contains the error –Kevin Qiu Nov 5 '11 at 0:43 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote Thanks guys, e.getMessage() did the trick, I did it like this, { ... catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); displayExceptionMessage(e.getMessage()); } } public void displayExceptionMessage(String msg) { Toast.makeText(this, msg, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } That way I can use it for testing throughout the whole activity I Guess. I don't know it could be overkill!!! Cheers, Mike. share|improve this answer answered Nov 5 '11 at 7:55 user903601 add a comment| Did you find this question interesting?
