systems come and go but error messages stay. Of course, this is because errors are (or were, before exceptions) signified by integer error codes and libraries maintain, among other error in history tok things, dictionaries of human-readable messages to go with such codes. Most system programmers, or

any other programmers which still dwell on C instead of using something less close to the metal, can remember a subset best error messages of those codes simply because they've seen them often enough. I first started using "real" computers with DOS, and I still remember that error code 2 is "File not found". But there are other, more http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/848945-Windows-error-history-or-something interesting ones. Executables and dynamically linked libraries often have those dictionaries embedded which are then only a strings away from plain view. Left-over error messages from the olden days can tell us a lot about the way technology progressed, its current - and even still present - limitations and quirks. The early days - WTF are we running on? By inspecting a set of executables built for modern Windows systems, with http://www.ivoras.net/blog/tree/2014/May-a-brief-history-of-computing-in-error-messages.html a modern Microsoft C/C++ compiler, we can find gems like these: R6002 - floating point support not loaded R6019 - unable to open console device Yes, there was a time where it was uncertain if the CPU the application is running on could operate on floating point values and a text-mode "console" (or a similar emulated device) was mandatory. The ntdll mentions floppy disks in the expected contexts: While accessing a floppy disk, an ID address mark was not found. While accessing a floppy disk, the track address from the sector ID field was found to be different than the track address maintained by the controller. The floppy disk controller reported an error that is not recognized by the floppy disk driver. While accessing a floppy-disk, the controller returned inconsistent results via its registers. but also once in a not quite expected one: The paging file cannot be created on a floppy diskette ... which is a good advice in any case, as swapping to a floppy disk would be - let's say - mildly insane. Once again, something in it thinks it may have to do without an FPU: A real-mode application issued a floating-point instruction and floating-point hardware is not present The question of bitness NTDLL also refer

Hello I have tried to user "File history" to make backups of my files on D: (not of the "official" Windows libraries) to an USB HD. I'm on Windows 10, https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/ref/lasterror.html latest update (anniversary edition), 64 bits. I know that the error messages appear only in the event logs of Windows and I look there for them. First I had many errors because of too long paths (>259 error messages characters). I spend hours to correct everything, so now it should be OK but the backup still crashes when I include some directories. Error in the event log: 201, something like "Impossible to analyse the changes...". No other error. And nothing is backed up. As this happens only when I include some directories, I suppose it has to do with specific files - but which ones? How can I find out which file history of error causes the problem? Does "File History" save more detailed informations somewhere? Thanks Patrick Last edited by paf; 18 Aug 2016 at 05:56. Or is it even worse that I thought, this scrappy piece of software not only doesn't display, but also doesn't even records why it stops? Descriptions = lasterror returns a structure s containing information about the most recent error issued by the MATLAB® software. The return structure contains the following fields:FieldnameDescription messageCharacter array containing the text of the error message. identifierCharacter array containing the message identifier of the error message. If the last error issued by MATLAB had no message identifier, then the identifier field is an empty character array. stackStructure providing information on the location of the error. The structure has fields file, name, and line, and is the same as the structure returned by the dbstack function. If lasterror returns no stack information, stack is a 0-by-1 structure having the same three fields.
