These are both in the Advanced Settings in IE. I have to test an app in MS Edge, but I'm getting a 500 internal Server error. No big deal, I can fix it if I know what's wrong. I don't see any such options in Advanced Settings in Edge. Is it possible to turn off Friendly Error Messages in MS Edge? internet-explorer microsoft-edge share|improve this question asked Dec 9 '15 at 22:20 Kirby L. Hope this helps! share|improve this answer answered Dec 10 '15 at 6:04 Etienne Margraff 52026 Well, it helps in that at least I know! ;-) Thanks! –Kirby L. Why the heck is it so hard for them to have a toggle hidden somewhere? –Doktor J Apr 28 at 8:23 No. The F12 tools does not show you the content of the error page from server. Instead, it does show the content of the Edge's builtin 500-error page. –s

Don't do that! –deceze Nov 19 '12 at 14:27 its an user-centric feature –Daniel A. White Nov 19 '12 at 14:27 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 6 down vote IE Implemented this feature because most users don't know what 404 means and it just confuses them further. Unfortunately for developers that means that useful information or a nicer implementation gets shielded from the user. Jeff Atwood has a decent writeup about 404 pages. One of his suggestions is : You have to make your customized 404 page larger than 512 bytes, otherwise IE will assume it's a standard web server 404 message and replace it with its own friendly-ized version. So try making your 404 page more than 512 bytes and see if it is then shown to the user. share|improve this answer answered Nov 19 '12 at 14:32 John Koerner 25.3k64279 Thanks its working now –Raju Nov 19 '12 at 15:13 1 @Raju Then, why not mark this the as the accepted answer? –Fabian Schmied Mar 1 '14 at 9:20 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote An HTTP response consists of the HTTP headers and the HTTP body. Explorer By default, web servers return 3-digit numeric error codes and terse “Reason” phrases when an error occurs. (For more about these codes and reason phrases, see HTTP errors.) Only if they are customized do they elaborate with more informative explanation about the error. To give users more information about errors when the server only returns such brief responses, Internet Explorer provides its own “friendly error messages” when the response from the server is shorter than a threshold (512 bytes for most responses). While often useful, such friendly error messages can occasionally hide more specific information provided by the server, so you might want to disable them. To control whether Internet Explorer uses “friendly error messages”: Go to the Internet Options control panel On the “Advanced” tab, scroll to the “Browsing” settings Towards the end of those settings, set the “Show friendly HTTP error messages” as you wish. Click the “OK” button.
