Private Message First Cup of Ubuntu Join Date Mar 2012 Beans 7 external NTFS drive I am no longer able to mount an external USB drive that was never more than 15% full, less than 6months old, infrequently used, and unlikely to have been mishandled. Right before this failure, it was half way through writing a ~3GB file - but the drive had several other files of this size. 'mount' tells me to run chkdsk on Windows except I am reluctant to do this until I either do a drive backup or am sure this won't cause data loss. mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt Code: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to calculate free MFT records: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more det

How I seriously do I have to take these messages since the device only spewing this messages when I unmount it, when I mount and use it I don't get any messages and the device works fine at this point as far I can see. mount external-hdd share|improve this question asked Nov 18 '14 at 1:39 Allard 1616 Hard to know without more information. I suggest you run fsck on the partition(s) and use smartmontools smartctl -a /dev/sda or smartctl -H /dev/sda change sda to your hard drive –bodhi.zazen Nov 18 '14 at 2:10 I have 2 external HDD's. One was able to give me info about the smart. dropbox.com/s/81nndc10yqy5ux8/smart%20first%20hdd.txt?dl=0 –Allard Nov 18 '14 at 12:58 The one that is giving the messages ? Is it healthy ? –bodhi.zazen Nov 18 '14 at 13:00 Those results look alright, see thomas-krenn.com/en/wiki/SMART_tests_with_smartctl –bodhi.zazen Nov 18 '14 at 13:08 The second drive I had to use in Windows and check with CrystalDiskInfo for the smart status. Note that this is a Seagate Disk. dropbox.com/s/v6bj2x4l1epao9z/smart%20hdd%202.png?dl=0

At boot, the device shows up as sdb, but later disconnects and reconnects as sdc. It's mounted in /media/storage, but after disconnecting, this directory simply shows an import/output error. The device is connected to a powered USB hub.
