Buffer I/o Error On Device Sda1 Logical Block
Anybody can ask a question Anybody can answer The best answers are voted up and rise to the top Buffer I/O errors up vote 0 down vote favorite I notice that when I unmount my external HDD I sometimes getting messages in my logs which saying: Buffer I/O error on device sdX, logical block XX Where the X stands for the device buffer i o error on device sdc1 logical block for example: sdc. How I seriously do I have to take these messages since the device only spewing this messages when I unmount it, when I mount and use it I don't get any messages and the device works fine at this point as far I can see. mount external-hdd share|improve this question asked Nov 18 '14 at 1:39 Allard 1616 Hard to know without more information. I suggest you run fsck on the partition(s) and use smartmontools smartctl -a /dev/sda or smartctl -H /dev/sda change sda to your hard drive –bodhi.zazen Nov 18 '14 at 2:10 I have 2 external HDD's. One was able to give me info about the smart. dropbox.com/s/81nndc10yqy5ux8/smart%20first%20hdd.txt?dl=0 –Allard Nov 18 '14 at 12:58 The one that is giving the messages ? Is it healthy ? –bodhi.zazen Nov 18 '14 at 13:00 Those results look alright, see thomas-krenn.com/en/wiki/SMART_tests_with_smartctl –bodhi.zazen Nov 18 '14 at 13:08 The second drive I had to use in Windows and check with CrystalDiskInfo for the smart status. Note that this is a Seagate Disk. dropb

[SOLVED] Hello!I'm a bit puzzled here to be honest. Granted i'm not using linux as much as I used to (not after windows buffer i o error on device sda logical block 7). I have archlinux running on my HTPC. Never had any issues before that was buffer i/o error on device logical block this severe, unless I upgraded and forgot to read news section. Booted the htpc today to be greeted by "Buffer I/O error on device buffer i/o error on device dm-0 sdd1, logical block" with a massive wall of text, a few seconds later "welcome to emergency mode."*This is NOT hdd where the linux kernel is residing on. What logical purpose would it serve for the kernel/userspace to abort everything http://askubuntu.com/questions/550840/buffer-i-o-errors just because fsck fails or something? If this was indeed my linux partition I would fully understand.Anyways, I used parted magic, ran fsck, smart. Sure enough fsck warned me about bad/missing superblock. Restored the superblock by using e2fsck. I had over 10 000 "incorrect size" chunks. Ran 2-3 SMART after that. fsck says okay, smart gives a 100% status report with no errors.Oh yeah, I have turned off FSCK completly in my fstab, thinking about at least turning it https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=171667 on my bigger hdds Questions:*Is SMART reliable? If it says it's alright, does that mean i'm safe? Would physical broken sectors turn up by SMART?*I know SMART warns the user in windows 7 if hdd failure is imment. Is this possible within linux as well? Since i'm NOT using a GUI, is this possible to send through a terminal/email?*Sometimes the HTPC have been forefully shut down (power breakage), could this be one of the causes of the I/O error? As always, thank you for your support. [SOLVED] Any reallocated sectors in smartmontools? If you run 'e2fsck -fv /dev/sdd1' does it complete wo/ errors? Probably best to repeat for all linux partitions on that disk. generalBuenas!
