What these errors means and why they're happening? Is it dtrace fault, or some specific process causing that? And how this problem can be addressed? The potential fix includes rebooting Mac into recovery mode (⌘-R at boot time), then in Terminal run: csrutil

Quitting iTunes resolves the error. share|improve this answer edited Sep 20 '13 at 23:24 Joseph Redfern 51828 answered Nov 6 '12 at 16:39 Daniel Serodio 21026 4 I get this error even when iTunes isn't running. –studgeek Nov 25 '12 at 14:52 add a comment| up vote 10 down vote The errors are getting output to stderr, and can be filtered out by running the command as such: sudo iotop -C 5 12 2>/dev/null This does have the side effect of filtering out any other errors that might come up. I've found it to be an ok tradeoff, in that it's made my iotop output readable. I'm not sure what the cause of the errors are, unfortunately. I've searched, but have not been able to find anything as of yet. share|improve this answer edited Jan 11 '13 at 11:40 Matt Gibson 1959 answered Oct 21 '11 at 20:30 David Ludwig 10113 add a comment| up vote 3 down vote In short, the error is shown when attempting to trace a process that has requested not to be traced. The error isn't technically cause by iTunes, but by a process that has dis

the system, in particular process activity. There has been some minor debate over the years about the performance impact of each, in particular whether top is a burden on the system. Here we use DTrace to measure what is really happening. 1. Background I've heard some sysadmins describe top as a CPU hog, others say they have never had a problem with the tool. Some have made the move to prstat, which is more accurate and supposedly less of a burden; others swear by top, especially due to the extra info printed. The following are stories I've heard over the years related to these tools and performance, A sysadmin once told me he was called to a performance problem on a production server, where all the managers were logged in checking it out. They couldn't see what was wrong, but he could - they were all running top. Once he convinced them not to the problem disappeared. One sysadmin said they had renamed top at work to "top_is_a_cpu_hog" to draw attention to the problem. Admins who continued to run top under the new name were constantly reminded of the problem in the process listing. So is top really a hog, or is this another "admin myth" like "sync; sync; sync; reboot"? DTrace can help us find out. 2. top and prstat top was written by William LeFebvre, first in 1984 (inspired by VMS's top 10 tool). top has been one of the most useful tools ever created for Unix, making the most of a 24x80 text display to show a system summary.
