page is incorrect. Unfortunately, there are several possible causes. by Leo A. Notenboom, © 2011 On some websites, occasionally including my online bank sites, the IRS, etc. etc., I sometimes get the message http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_fix_error_on_page_when_visiting_a_website_and_what_does_error_on_page_mean.html "Error on page," and the links don't work. What causes this message to appear and is there anything I can do to avoid it? I assume that the problem is with the site and not my computer, which makes http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001032.htm me think I can't do much, but I thought I'd ask. It's very inconvenient. I use Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8. • Taken quite literally, "Error on page" means exactly that: there's an error of some sort error on on the web page that is being displayed in your browser. There are three common reasons why this message can appear. With two, you can try to do something about, but with the other, you can't. • Reason One: It's The Website's Fault Web pages are written in what boils down to one or more programming languages.† HTML - HyperText Markup Language - is the fundamental language used to code web pages. It defines things like paragraphs, error on page bold, italics and other characteristics of page layout. Javascript, while separate and distinct from HTML, is another programming language that is often used within web pages to add interactive functionality. If you've used Google Docs, for example, you've seen a word processor or a spreadsheet program implemented primarily in Javascript. Java, which is unrelated to Javascript, is yet another programming language that can be used on web pages to create even richer applications that are available and run simply by visiting a web page. Like any programming language, it's possible for the humans writing the programs or pages to make mistakes. That's one source of "Error on page". Typically, the problem is in Javascript and the "Error on page" may indicate that there's a quite literally an error that's been left in by the web page designer or author. If that's the case, there's nothing that you can do, other than let the website owner know. Reason Two: Incomplete Downloads This is probably the more common reason for "Error on page". When you view a web page, say this one on Ask Leo!, your browser downloads the file that "is" the web page (an .html file, in this page's case). Based on what that page contains, your browser may then also download additional files, such as image files (like my smiling face, up at the top, for example), Javascript file
the page you're attempting to view has JavaScript or other script related errors. Because this error is generated by errors that are in the code, unless you've access to edit the page you'll be unable to fix this error. However, the page will still be visible although may not have all of its intended functionality. Is this a computer problem or will it cause my computer problems? No. As mentioned above this is only an issue with the web page you're loading. All other web pages should load normally. Web designer If you're the web designer or editor of a page that is getting this error, look at the source code and verify no errors exist in the JavaScript or other scripts used. Often this is caused by improper syntax, incomplete code, or scripts that are not placed in the proper section of the HTML. For example, some JavaScript's require some code to be in the
portion of the code and other portions be in the . Additional information See our error and JavaScript definitions for further information and related links on these terms. Was this page useful?
