When on Hardy - ytalk/talk would not inform me about talk requests - did what I could - added "mesg y" to .bashrc - couldn't fix it, so worked around it by getting ssh users to drop "eyes" onto tty7 - not exactly great but it let me know they were there so I could talk them. Now on ibex, I can't get any ytalk/talk to work. Whenever I try to "talk" it opens the interface, delay and then tells me "No talk daemon on euphemus". I have checked all the treads/post here and Google - nothing. I really like using ytalk (that is the one I need help with). I have the latest ytalk and talkd - I have tried older versions and even got the updates from different mirrors (not my local) - nothing. Can someone help? It all seems to come down to talkd - which seems to give other users trouble too. Namely, I would like to establish conversation between ubuntu machine and my F11. How to manage that? Google doesn't provide to much information about the question. I suppose so it is because talk is an ancient program. Whenever I try talk user ubuntu I get: '─[ Error on read from talk daemon: Connection refused. Press any key... ]' and then message '[Checking for invitation on caller's machine]' appears which will never disappear. And exactly the same situation on ubuntu machine. Could anybody from Geek's help me? Thanks in advance! talk is an ancient thing and I highly recommend you don't use it, for the same reasons you shouldn't user telnet or any other unencrypted communications. If you must, you have to install the talk-server RPM, make sure that the talkd daemon is set to run or have xinetd start it for you and have UDP port 517 open in the firewall on both machines. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Systems Engineer ricks nerd com - - AIM/Skype: therps2 ICQ: 22643734 Yahoo: origrps2 - - - - To err is human, to moo bovine. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow-Ups: Re: talk set up From: Hiisi References: talk set up From: Hiisi [Date Prev][Date Next] [Thread Prev][Thread Next] [Thread Index] [Date Index] [Author Index]
