Network goes down, absolutely no applications can be started ("The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142).") and the only option is to reboot. During shutdown a blue screen comes up (referring to rdbss.sys and STOP code 0X000000D4). Any ideas about the cause and how to fix it? It seems to be a problem other people experience as well, but so far I couldn't find a fix for it (see for example http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1159333610). The computer worked fine with Windows Vista and the problems started only after a fresh XP installation. I guess it could be a hardware problem but, at least to me, it really doesn't look like it at the moment. Do you have any special disk configurations? –Hello71 Jul 23 '10 at 0:08 It is a standard, unmodified lenovo thinkpad. So no, not really. –maschka Jul 23 '10 at 13:01 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted STOP 0xD4 is SYSTEM_SCAN_AT_RAISED_IRQL_CAUGHT_IMPROPER_DRIVER_UNLOAD. As Microsoft themselves write: This indicates that a driver did not cancel pending operations before unloading. They also note the following: If the driver responsible for the error can be identified, its name is printed on the blue screen and stored in memory at the location (PUNICODE_STRING) KiBugCheckDriver. which most likely refers to the rdbss.sys file. That file is apparently the "Redirected Drive Buffering SubSystem Driver", which is part of Windows. This MSDN page suggests it's only loaded for use with network (SMB) shares. All of this put together suggests that it's happening because XP is trying to use the network (the pending operations)

Error caused by rdbss.sys file Discussion in 'Software' started by marysonmac, Mar 5, 2010. marysonmac Private E-2 I have been getting a blue screen after using IE 8 lately. A reboot clears it http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/stop-error-caused-by-rdbss-sys-file.211713/ up for a while. All drivers have been updated, according to microsoft update. What is the next step when it happens again? Spybot and Malwarebytes show no problems. marysonmac, Mar 5, 2010 #1 dlb MajorGeek After some real quick research, it seems that the file rdbss.sys commonly causes blue screen errors and is usually associated to some type of internet activity, whether it's Skype, IE, Maxthon browser, and it occasionally causes USB devices error on to fail until the PC is rebooted. The BSOD can also be caused by some type of router/modem issue as illustrated in this thread. You can try the Microsoft Hotfix available here (yeah- it says it's for Server2003, but if you scroll down, you'll see it's for XP also). You can also try uninstalling IE8 (if possible) and going back to IE6 or IE7. It could be a compatibility issue between IE8 and your error on windows modem/router.... good luck! (BTW- please include your OS version next time ) dlb, Mar 5, 2010 #2 brandypeppy MajorGeek What OS are you running? This started after installing IE8? Open a command box and type eventvwr What, if any, reports do you see? You can post them back here. Also, does this occur in safe mode? :wave:wave brandypeppy, Mar 5, 2010 #3 marysonmac Private E-2 Running XP home that came with IE8. Didn't install it. Event viewer shows a sytem error that resulted in blue screen after a couple of errors saying various applications hang. Explain how to post event logs here and I will. Thanks marysonmac, Mar 9, 2010 #4 brandypeppy MajorGeek Highlight the events, holding down the shift key. Right click, copy, paste in notepad and attach to a post here.:wave:wave brandypeppy, Mar 9, 2010 #5 marysonmac Private E-2 0000: 53 79 73 74 65 6d 20 45 System E 0008: 72 72 6f 72 20 20 45 72 rror Er 0010: 72 6f 72 20 63 6f 64 65 ror code 0018: 20 34 30 30 30 30 30 38 4000008 0020: 30 20 20 50 61 72 61 6d 0 Param 0028: 65 74 65 72 73 20 38 36 eters 86 0030: 65 35 33 31 33 30 2c 20 e531
