A receive measurement error timeout being exceeded by the remote host up vote 1 down vote favorite I have been working through a head-scratcher with WCF. I have a WCF Service (hosted as a Windows Service) that is called by a console application. It works great, but recently we have run into a timeout issue at 10 minutes when we had to run a query against a legacy system. I use

log4net in both the service and the client .exe, and what is strange is that the service actually completes the job and throws no exception. It runs the query (which takes about 12 minutes, and creates a file, and logs success). The console application, however, logs an exception, claiming that the "host" returned a timeout or an error. I presume it's a timeout and not a buffer issue, because the exception always happens exactly 10 minutes to the second after the call is initially made. Here is the exception/stack info from my log4net: 2015-07-28 17:35:47,364 [1] System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: The socket connection was aborted. This could be caused by an error processing your message or a receive timeout being exceeded by the remote host, or an underlying network resource issue. it only takes a minute: Sign up WCF Windows Service TimeOut up vote 15 down vote favorite 8 I have a client application developed in .net seding a request to wcf service and supposed to send reponse .if execution http://stackoverflow.com/questions/31707925/wcf-the-socket-connection-was-aborted-a-receive-timeout-being-exceeded-by-the time with in 1 minute, there is no error,if it exceeds 1 minute the error is Inner exception: This request operation sent to net.tcp://localhost:18001/PitToPort/2008/01/30/StockpileService/tcp did not receive a reply within the configured timeout (00:01:00). The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout. This may be because the service is still processing the operation or because the service was unable to send a reply message. Please consider increasing the operation timeout (by casting the http://stackoverflow.com/questions/919287/wcf-windows-service-timeout channel/proxy to IContextChannel and setting the OperationTimeout property) and ensure that the service is able to connect to the client How to increase the time out and how? What is the best solution? .net windows wcf web-services exception-handling share|improve this question edited May 11 '12 at 10:12 Tom Redfern 18.6k73581 asked May 28 '09 at 5:19 rmdussa 70372347 add a comment| 9 Answers 9 active oldest votes up vote 59 down vote Be careful, this error message is a boilerplate string WCF sends when it doesn't have a clue what happened. It really means "mmh something went wrong in the chain but I'm not really sure what, so, here's some trivia about the configuration, do what you want with it". MOST OF THE TIME when you get this message it has nothing to do with actual timeouts. It can be quotas (number of objects in the graph, overall size, array length) or something that went wrong server-side, between the time your service method returned a result and the actual bytes were sent over the wire. So, you should check your configuration settings (and not the timeout, except if you had to actually wait for one minute to get the error. If you got the error straight away, it has nothing to do with timeouts whatsoever). This useless message is on top of my list of WCF annoyances. share|improve this answer edited Jun 3 '09 at

However, when I try to retrieve results using nettcp binded client, I am getting following error: The socket connection was aborted. This could be caused by an error processing your message or a receive timeout being exceeded by the remote host, or an underlying network resource issue. Local socket timeout was '00:30:00'. I'm assuming the problem is with a mismatch in bindings between the server and client. –Peter Kjaer Apr 10 '14 at 8:11 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote The exception says about the receiveTimeout, but It could be misleading sometimes and the issue is with something else. based on my experience with tridion core service, it could be with maxBufferSize maxBufferPoolSize maxReceivedMessageSize readerQuotas for the binding. This Could be a possible duplicate of the issue Tridion 2011 SP1 Core Service Timeouts Below link could be useful as well
