I created http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/grub-geom-error-287509/ a new partition (10 GB in size) and used it for the Linux installation. After install, I was getting GRUB geom error and my system wasn't booting. After a few tries I had to format my entire hard disk and run fixmbr which came up with the following warning message: A new MBR will be created and some of the partition may become inaccessible Now, even though I have gotten back Windows, the Linux partition is not at all visible. (Seems like the http://superuser.com/questions/199074/grub-geom-error-trying-to-install-linux warning message has become a reality as that partition looks like has become inaccessible.) My new hard disk capacity has also reduced by 10 GB and it is not showing up using any software. How can I recover that inaccessible partition? Edit I tried fdisk via Linux Rescue disk. Got an error 22, the details as follows: Command (m for help): w The partition table has been altered! Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table. WARNING: Re-reading the partition table failed with error 22: Invalid argument The kernel still uses the old table. The new table will be used at the next reboot. It'll fix your boot loader. http://www.supergrubdisk.org/ Burn the ISO to a disk, stick it in your drive, reboot, boot from disk, follow the instructions. Problem Installed PGP WDE 10.1.1 (or earlier) on Windows machine and after reboot, boot hangs with "Initializing loading" and Windows fails to load This message appears on screen: "Loading password authentication driver loading stage2. PGPWDE disk data are corrupted. Please use PGP recovery disk." Issue occurs with some newer generation laptops and geom error desktops from Dell, Lenovo, Asus and Samsung running Windows 7 64-bit. Cause According to Symantec (product owner of PGP), this issue was triggered by an incompatibility in the memory allocation code in their pre-boot in PGP Desktop (versions 10.1.x). Other indicators point to a problem with Optimus in the BIOS. Symantec has identified this issue on multiple systems and has a solution available (see below). Solution Use the recovery tool (a CD ISO image) provided by Symantec geom error windows for diagnostic purposes as referenced in the following KB article: www.symantec.com/docs/TECH160346. MIT users can download the tool by clicking this link. The recovery tool can be used to test hardware prior to deployment of the product if you suspect that new hardware could be affected by this issue. If you are still having problems after trying to fix it, please contact pgp-help@mit.edu. Workaround If you need to have the drive encrypted and are still experiencing the boot error, you can boot off the recovery CD in the meantime. Instructions by Symantec on verifying the fix (posted here as well) After burning the ISO to a CD, please follow the instructions for the current state of the system (not encrypted or encrypted) for verification: On a hard disk that is not encrypted: Boot an affected laptop with the newly created recovery CD. Ok, I've got an Acer Travelmate C100 (one of the first tablet PCs, I think) and I hooked up an external (USB) CD/DVD drive to install Ubuntu 9.10. Much to my surprise and delight, everything works completely when installed - even the "tablet" aspect of the PC. I just have one incredibly nagging problem: when I try to boot, I get the "GRUB GEOM error" message. But, if I leave the CD/DVD attached, start the live CD and then select "boot from the first hard drive" it works fine. I've searched on the forums and found threads where people are trying to dual boot with WinXP. Ubuntu is running better than WinXP Tablet PC edition ever did, so the only OS on the PC is Ubuntu. No dual boot or RAID or anything like that, and only one hard drive. I also ended up on this site http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:The_Boot_...RUB_Geom_Error and as best as I can determine my problem has to do with #4 listed under "Cause:". But, I've only got two partitions, one being the swap, and I don't know how I could get the boot loader any closer to the front of the hard drive since Ubuntu is the only OS on there.
