faced the exact same thing twice.1. When I just downloaded SQL Developer2. When I used it after a long time (having made various changes to my computer)For the first part, I was too juvenile to know that I'd have to download an Oracle XE as well for the database. So I did download and installed it and it worked. For the second time, I got fed up and did the exact same thing.ie,1. Remove all the existing Oracle XE files (uninstall by clicking the setup file and saying install. The wizard will ask you to repair. Don't. Just choose the remove option)2. That done, again use the setup wizard to install. (Set the password for user: system as preferably oracle )3. Try establishing the connection with the given password. It should work :)43k Views · View UpvotesRelated QuestionsMore Answers BelowWhy was the NC (network computers) launched by Oracle a failure? What can be done if a Windows 7 laptop faces both error 651 and 720 while establishing a network connection? What should I do to resolve error 651 to connect PC to internet in windows 7?How do i resolve the following error message on an iPhone? If your SQL Developer is launched from a network location (specifically, a different location than your database network location), that could be the issue. I was having the same problem and I moved my installation to my local drive and it connected right away :) share|improve this answer edited Feb 11 '15 at 14:00 answered Jan 30 '15 at 23:07 elektrykalAJ 67248 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. I can see that you're using Oracle XE. You should go to the Oracle Admin page and create the username and database there and give that username/password and database in the Oracle SQL Developer when you're creating a connection. Let me start by saying that I have used Sql developer on mac OS for a couple of years without any issues and I use it everyday because I like the product. The connection reset (IO Error: Connection reset Vendor code 17002) issue am experiencing is something very specific to SQL developer version 3.x (my version is 3.0.03.97) and when connected over ethernet to a specific database 11gR2. The java version am using, $java -version java version "1.6.0_24" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_24-b07-334-10M3326) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.1-b02-334, mixed mode) Interesting enough, I tried with older version of Sql developer 2.1.1.64 on the same network (ethernet) connecting to the same database works. Also, another interesting fact is that this same exact connection works over wireless (wi-fi) and VPN on SQL developer 3.x versions. I did try to find answers in this discussion forum as well on the internet before posting it here.
