am running a dbms_stats job with default_degree and I'm getting a ORA-01115 error. This is an 8 CPU server running 10g on HP/UX. BEGIN DBMS_STATS.GATHER_DICTIONARY_STATS (ESTIMATE_PERCENT => DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE, METHOD_OPT ora-01115: io error reading block from file 4 => 'FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO', DEGREE => DBMS_STATS.DEFAULT_DEGREE, GRANULARITY => 'ALL', CASCADE => TRUE, OPTIONS => 'GATHER', NO_INVALIDATE => FALSE); END;*ERROR at line 1:ORA-12801: error signaled in parallel query server P012ORA-01115: IO error reading block from file 22 (block # 969)ORA-27072: File I/O error I only have 8 CPU's and I don't understand why Oracle fired-off 12 ora-27070 async read/write failed parallel query slaves (parallel query server P012). What causes this ORA-01115 error in automatic parallel query? When I manually reduce the parallelism, it runs fine! Answer: The docs note this about the ORA-01115 error, the ORA-01115 is a transient I/O error not related to block corruption: ORA-01115: IO error reading block from file string (block # string) Cause: Device on which the file resides is probably offlineAction: Restore access to the device Using 12 parallel query slaves probably not optimal for an 8 CPU server, and Oracle may have over-estimated the optimal degree of parallelism. Here are the rules I use for optimizing the degree of parallelism. Also note that using parallel automatic tuning can HURT your performance, and I prefer to set parallelism manually, on a case-by-case basis. I suspect that your error is caused by firing off too many parallel query slaves, but you should also check for a bug on MOSC. You can pinpoint the tablespace and segment for an ORA-01444 error by plugging-in the file_id and block_id into this query on dba_extents: select owner,tablespace_name, segment_type, segment_name from dba_extentswhere file_id = 1030and blo

when a single issue could arise for different reasons. Will list out some of the common causes of an 'ORA-01115: IO error reading block from file (block http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_ora_1115_io_error_reading_block_from_file.htm # )' error over here. Typically, when Oracle failed to read a data block from an open data file, it throws an ORA-01115 error. Before you suspect any database issue, it is advised to have a close look at the error message stack presented before and after the ORA-01115 error in the database alert.log http://jaffardba.blogspot.com/2013/06/ora-01115-io-error-reading-block-from.html file. As there could be a different reason for this error when comparing the same error over the net or previous occurrence, it is pretty important that you isolate the issue looking at the other error messages represented along with this error. One of the following would be the most common reasons for the error: the datafile in the context is OFFLINE database might have lost communication with the underlying ASM instance caused by any hardware problems physical data block corruption at the storage level a Oracle BUG We have encountered similar issue in one of our RAC databases due to communication loss with the underlying ASM instance. It very well could be a corruption on the device. The fact that the error is on "file 1" makes it even more problematic: File 1 holds the SYSTEM tablespace.Hopefully, you have a fairly recent full backup of your database, and you the database is in ARCHIVELOG mode, so that you can recover the database up to the most recently committed transaction.Do not ignore this error message. It represents problems in your database.Log a trouble ticket with Oracle MetaLink if the remedial steps, above, fail.
