At least two states, Florida and Kentucky, do not accept ACPE accreditation for all pharmacy CE requirements. "Florida is very strict about HIV/AIDS education and other areas," acknowledged Vivian McGuire, regulatory specialist with the Florida Board of Pharmacy. "Eventually, we will let ACPE accreditation take over, but for now, certain courses must be approved by Florida." It's not that Florida's board doesn't trust ACPE, McGuire said. But state legislators have mandated specific CE topics. Pharmacists licensed in Florida must have at least two hours of CE on medication errors every two years, she noted. Among other topics, courses must cover root cause analysis and patient safety issues. Since the board must certify that approved medication-error CE meets those statutory requirements, she said, the board must check and approve courses in advance. ACPE approval doesn't guarantee that the course includes all of the topics mandated by the legislature.
