process memory size limits On AIX, the process size limits are defined in the file. A value of -1 indicates that there is either no limit or it is unlimited. The default number of data segments is one. The size of a data segment is 256 MB. Data segments are shared for both data and stack. The maximum number of additional data segments a process can use is eight. Setting the maximum number of AIX data segments that a process can use (LDR_CNTRL) In AIX, Version 4.3.3, the number of segments that a process can use for data is controlled by the LDR_CNTRL environment variable. It is defined in the parent process of the process that is to be affected. For example, the following defines one additional data segment: export LDR_CNTRL =MAXDATA=0x10000000 start_process unset LDR_CNTRL It is a good idea to unset the LDR_CNTRL environment variable, so that it does not unintentionally affect other processes. Unlike other environment variables for the IBM SecureWay Directory server process (slapd), the LDR_CNTRLenvironment variable cannot be set as a front-end variable in the slapd32.conf file. Error Message VxVM vxdg ERROR V-5-1-10978 Disk group MSLEE_DG-0_76: import failed: Memory allocation failure Cause There will be two possible causes for this error: 1. The VxVM software is not patched and setulimit is setting maxDATA to something unexpected because 10% of physmem is greater than 4GB. 2. The VxVM software is patched, and the default setting of 8 memory segments (2GB maxDATA) is not sufficient. Limitation with setulimit() observed in VxVM 5.0 code (AIX): setulimit() gets the current physical memory in Kilobytes. It calls ulimit() with a new value only if the current data segment resource limit is less than the new calculated limit. The new calculated limit is nothing but 10% of total physical memory. Due to limitation/bug in setulimit function, it doesn’t check whether the new calculated limit, which is greater than the current data segment value, is a valid entity.
