The IssueAlmost exactly an hour after starting up (as far as I can tell), apps become unresponsive, and the beachball appears. I can usually still move the mouse, but iTunes playback ceases and nothing else works. It does not depend on what I am doing at the time. The only way out is to force a shut-down using the power key. This has happened repeatedly for the last two days. For the most recent crash, I had activity monitor open in the background so I could see what was going on - it stopped working 8-9 seconds before I could no longer send iChat messages.SpecMy MBP is a bit of a Frankenstein's Monster - it is a 15" 2008 penrhyn model (with 2.4 GHz dual core). It originally came with Leopard, I think, but has since been upgraded to Lion via the App Store. I have also upgraded the following: the RAM was replaced the day I got the Mac; the original hard drive was swapped out for a 500GB model two years ago; and about one year ago I stripped out the optical drive and replaced that with a 64GB SSD, which is now my boot drive. Another thing to note is that my battery ballooned recently so I have been using it without a battery installed (this has not been a problem). My ProgressHere's a summary of what I've done so far and the results I've had:Restarting: Obviously no dice.Resetting the PRAM: No luck.Hardware Test Mode: AHT was not installed with Lion, but I downloaded the SL copy posted in this thread. It ran (slowly) two or three times, but each time got stuck when testing the logic board (again, forcing me to do a hard shut-down).Deleting new software: I uninstalled any software that I had picked up in the last week.OnyX: I ran various cache cleaners using the OnyX app.Safe Mode: I ran the system in safe mode, using it as normal. After an hour it crashed again. So no luck so far - I can't tell if it's a hardware or software problem. I would love it to be a software problem because I would like it if my MBP lasted a little while longer. If anyone has any suggestions as to what else to try, they would be welcome. I would happily post a log if needed, but I'm not sure where to find one (it doesn't come up with a crash report when the Mac comes back on). PCL XL error's when printing 4 replies, 6716 views Posted on July 16, 2012 dspate Registered user Joined: April 2, 2012 Has anyone else out there had issues printing from MS Office 2010 to group policy deployed color printers? All of our Unidesk desktops have this issue with color printers only. Driver changes, print processor changes, and print server changes do not make a difference. I created a case with Microsoft and they recomended to use an HP universal 5.5.0 driver, and they was all the help they provided. Printing from other applications works fine. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Darren Spatedspate@fcoe.org Posted on July 17, 2012 Wayne Honeyman Registered user Joined: October 19, 2011 We have had the same problem with all deployed printers and have had success in changing the printing preferences/effects tab/resizing options to print document on letter and check the scale to fit. Hope it helps. Posted on July 17, 2012 dspate Registered user Joined: April 2, 2012 Thanks whoneyman. That did that trick. Posted on July 20, 2012 dspate Registered user Joined: April 2, 2012 So Whoneyman's zoom and fit to print option worked for a few printers. I stil have an HP CLJ 4700 that still spits out the PCL XL error illegal media size error. Any thoughts from anyone esle? How does everyone else implement printers in their enviroment? Darren Spatredspate@fcoe.org Posted on August 10, 2012 Rob Lasky Registered user Joined: September 28, 2010 We also were getting the PCL XL error pages being generated on many of our HP printers along with odd margin issues. What we ended up doing was creating Unidesk app layers with universal print driver and the printerinstalled locally in them. It's no different than installing the printer locally as admin on the personalizaton layer, which was our workaround for a little while before I got the layers built. Resolved all the issues with HP printers. We have a few different layers that contain printers for specific departments, so we just assign printers to usersthat way. The only thing that doesnt seem to work is setting the defaultprinter. But we had problems with that before when deploying by login script. We are still using our print server for our Ricoh copiers. The Ricoh's work fine as shared printers on the Unidesk desktops.
