I try to establish an ODBC connection from a W2003(64bit) server to a MySql database on a Suse Linux server. All firewalls are open (checked mysql odbc 5.1 driver not showing up after install with the FW administrator). Yet, I am getting the following message: [08S01] [MySQL][ODBC 5.1 Driver]Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 2 I use the latest ODBC driver from MySql (5.1, but I get the same error with 3.51). It took me about a week to find the solution to the same problem and with many posts. Funny, none of the posts could help. It was eventually the MySql ref. manual that gave the answer - you need to reset the roots password and permissions. The link below gives you a step by step which worked for me. But, with your advice about "skip_name_resolve" now everything works fine!
