We had similar problems using a WatchGuard firewall. We had to turn off the SMTP proxy. - Andrew andrewking, Jan 5, 2005 #2 Advertisements Bill Peng [MSFT] Guest Hi Stephan, I understand the problem to be as follows: You used a valid e-mail address (from/to) to send an e-mail to the SBS SMTP server, but sometimes you got an NDR message "554 5.5.2 No valid recipients". If I'm out of base, please don't hesitate to let me know. To clarify this issue, please let me know: 1. Whether you send the e-mail from the internet or from the corporate LAN. 2. Whether this issue happens on all senders/certain senders/all recipients/certain recipients. 3. If you would, please save the ndr e-mail as a .msg file and attach it to the post. Based on KB 284204, Delivery status notifications in Exchange Server and in Small Business Server http://support.microsoft.com/kb/284204/en-us [Important:] It seems that the possible cause of the 5.2.2 error is: The recipient's mailbox is over its storage limit. Please verify the mailbox storage and the queue storage quota limit on your exchange server. You can enable message tracking on the problematic Exchange Server to check the root cause of the error. 1. Enable Message Tracking on by right-click your Exchange server in ESM and click Properties. Use Telnet to troubleshoot. (This method can help us determine if the problem occurs when communicating with the SMTP

using Exchange 2003 as its SMTP server. The web application is NOT using a native SMTP engine so there is no relaying involved. When the application points to the Exchange server and tries to send an email to an external recipient, it returns error 554 5.5.2 "No valid recipients". Sending through the same web application to internal users is successful. We have tested the following: 1.) Sent email from Outlook client to the external recipient using the Exchange server - this works fine. 2.) Telnet to the remote mail server from the Exchange server and send a message to the external recipient from the command line - this works fine. 3.) Reconfigured the application to point to the Unix Sendmail server and send an email to the external user - this also works fine. When I look in the SMTP logs on Exchange, I see this (edited for privacy) 2006-09-07 18:28:01 12.34.56.78 internalsender RCPT - +TO:< XXXX@XXXXX.COM > 550 0 56 34 2006-09-07 18:28:01 12.34.56.78 internalsender DATA - - 554 0 0 4 2006-09-07 18:28:01 12.34.56.78 internalsender QUIT - internalsender 240 406 31 4 Any ideas on what the problem could be or where I should be looking for clues? Top Error 554 5.5.2 "No valid recipients" by Ed Crowley » Sun, 10 Sep 2006 07:42:18 The 554 is an SMTP error, so SMTP must be involved.
