I had the exact same thing happen to my DVD player. Played a disc how to fix a dvd player that says no disc and got an error. I noticed the motor wasn't working any more and had to send it back to the store (good thing I had an extended warrenty, got a replaced). If the motor is working and the CD is spinning, could be another internal problem. badmana View Public Profile Find all posts by badmana #4 09-22-2003, 04:11 PM Boyo Jim Member Join Date: Nov 2001 Location: Madison, WI Posts: 36,723 My opinion as a media technician is that if unplugging, resetting, and a but of shaking have no result, toss it. It will cost as more to diagnose and repair it than replace it. If you are an electronics hobbyist, or you would like to be, however, ignore my above advice. Go at it, and as as with any other hobby, be prepared to spend spend spend. Several things could be the problem: as noted above, mechanical transport problem. laser not lasing or misaligned. optical receiver obstructed/misaligned/misfunctioning. Some interior chip has failed in a way that directs input down the wrong branch of the logic tree. Most likely causes of such problems are either power surges or physical impacts. The former blows out circuitry, the latter tends to knock components out of alignment and/or jam up moving parts. My dvd player says no valid disc. +1 vote! +7 vote up you voted Answer by salamander(408) I would first try a lens cleaner. Its a disc that has a small line of fine bristles on http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=212858 it so when it spins it wipes off the lens. if that doesn't work I'd try to manually reset the player. Most electronic devices have a small pin tip size button on the back that says reset. add a comment +1 vote! +7 vote up you voted Answer by frank52(151) The best way to troubleshoot a portable dvd player that has a error message no valid disc is to first clean the disc. Make sure it does not have finger http://snippets.com/can-you-help-me-troubleshoot-a-portable-dvd-player-that-has-erro.htm prints or smudges on it. If that does not work you need to check if you are useing a dvd and not a cd. add a comment +1 vote! +7 vote up you voted Answer by christian123(25) Try inserting another DVD, seeing as some less expensive DVD players are less compatible with certain types of DVD. Make sure the DVD player is of brand name and that should fix your problems. add a comment +1 vote! +4 vote up you voted Answer by tenritsu(51) You should try to play other DVDs, preferably brand new ones that aren't scratched. If your portable dvd player cannot play ANY DVDs, it could mean the laser in the dvd player is damaged or unclean and requires repair. Secondly, if you are using an incorrect CD or a pirated movie disc, the dvd player might refuse to play. add a comment +1 vote! +3 vote up you voted Answer by sonaliraghunathan(25) The problem may be that your DVD player is not equipped to read other formats like MP3 etc. If however your DVD player is not able to read a DVD then it may be a hardware problem. That requires you to open up the outer panel and debug the circuit inside and fix it up. add a comment Security code is wrong! Ask Your Own Consumer Electronics Question Customer: replied7 years ago. Yes - the fault first occurred a year ago and I retried today after finding the DVD player during a spring clean! Player powers up OK and disc spins when loaded. Display indicates 'Loading Disc' then (after many minutes), shows 'No valid disc'. All of the discs I have tried result in this message, even though they all play perfectly in my normal DVD player. Expert: PramitP replied7 years ago. Hi,The problem is with the optical assembly of the unit.Use a DVD LENS CLEANER and I hope the problem will be solved. If not then from your description it seems that the lens will be going out of order very soon(touchwood) There is no quickfix for this. The last thing that you can try is cleaning the optical assembly manually using isopropyl alcohol. NOTE: You have to disassemble the whole unit inorder to clean it manual
dual DVD Player (the one we use for travel to keep kids content with movies) decided it did not want to read our DVD's anymore. It would spin the DVD's, but a "no disc" error would come up on the screen. This was frustrating because it was needed for a 9-hour road trip my husband and younger girls would take the next day. So, I decided to do what most Americans do - throw up my hands, and run to Walmart to buy a new one. Frustrating! Another electronic item to add to the dump. Since I stayed home from the trip, I decided to see if I could fix the DVD player myself; me, who has no idea what a circuit board is. I laugh because of my lack of electronic knowledge, but my enormous amount of determination. I spent two hours searching the internet for some guidance. Most suggested it would cost me $80 for a repairman to look at it. The first suggestion was to unplug the DVD player and remove all screws to take off the cover to look for damage. I figured I had nothing to lose since it was probably going to end up in the trash. After taking off the cover, I stared at the circuit board, hoping that something would jump out at me to tell me what was wrong. Not seeing any burnt out areas, I closed it back up. For some reason I ended up with two extra screws! Mmmm. Probably not needed anyway, right? Then I found a post that suggested I clean the lens (that little glass circle in white above) with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol. I did this but DVD's still would not play. Next I tried to push the lens housing (see the white area surrounded by black, then green in the picture above) by forcing it away from the black circle thingy you put your DVD's on, towards the top. I pushed pretty hard. Wow! It slid up smoothly on its own. It was jammed. I put a DVD in, closed the lid, and was never so excited to see The Chronicles of Narnia. A DVD player saved from the trash. I can't find the post to thank the techie that helped me with these ideas, but thanks!
