You're minding your own business trying http://blogs.technet.com/b/wordonenotesupport/archive/2009/12/14/office-2003-error-unexpected-error-occurred-please-try-again-later-or-contact-your-system-administrator.aspx to RMS protect some content, and BAM! "An unexpected error has occurred while trying to restrict permissions to your document. Contact your administrator for assistance." You shake your fist in the air, and wonder if you really want to talk to your administrator. He drinks alot of coffee, smokes, and violates your personal space when talking. Arghh.. Well, I'll save you the https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/rmssupp/2011/10/04/office-2010-users-receive-an-an-unexpected-error-has-occurred-while-trying-to-irm-protect-content/ trip and you can copy and paste this to him, OR if you are the administrator grab your mints and read-on. ========================================== The problem is with the RMS URLs. If you have a certification or licensing URL that contains a :443 you will have problems. Office tries to match up CLC certificates with RACs by matching up the RMS URL embedded in those certs. If the certification cert has a :443, but the licensing cert doesn't then you'll hit this error. I've fixed (err…worked around) this for a few customers recently, and the Office team is actively pursuing a fix. I like to fix (ahem..work around) this issue by permanently fixing the ADRMS install so they dont have to worry about string comparisons within office. The upside is that once you do this procedure you don't have to worry about this problem that has been around since Office 2003. The downside is that you will need to write a logon script that removed all of your users %localappdata%\Microsoft\DRM\*.drm files so they can re-bootstrap, AND you will most likely need to Archive and recreate your R

Following Follow Windows Rights Management Services Hello, I'm trying to use Windows RMS with Office 2003 and 2007 clients and it's not working. For bit more background: I got this working without any issues about 2 years ago. At that time we decided that it was a good feature, but we never wanted to protect documents until now. Now I tried office 2003 rms to restrict the rights on a Word document, and I found out that it's not working any longer. I'm not sure when this stopped working or why. In Word 2003 when I create a new document and go to: File->Permission->Restrict Permission As... I get: "Unexpected error has occurred. Please try again later or contact your administrator" ... this is a error dialog box with the standard red x icon. So far I've tried the following to fix it: Reinstalled Windows Rights Management Client SP2Rebooted the workstationRebooted the serverTried on different workstationsTried on Office 2007 on the same domain.Similar problem, In office 2007 I don't even get the "restrict permission" button even though my RMS client SP2 is installed. I had to add the button by customizing the toolbar but it's always greyed out. When I logged into my administration site, it told me that my "server licensor certificate" expired and that I can click renew button below to renew it. I did that and now my certificate expiration date is in 2011. The clients still don't work. I've done the following diagnostic tests: RMS Toolkit's GetRMSCP.exe: serviceBindingInformation: http://serve01/_wmcs/Certification distinguishedName: CN=SCP,CN=RightsManagementServices,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=XXXInc,DC=localConfirmed that I can open up http://se

Users also could not save documents with RMS, which is used to prevent sensitive documents from being opened by unauthorized users, among other functions. The problem was caused by the expiration of an Information Rights Management (IRM) certificate. On Saturday, Microsoft released a hotfix, it wrote on its Office Sustained Engineering Team blog .The problem affects Word 2003, Word 2003 Viewer, Excel 2003, Excel 2003 Viewer, PowerPoint 2003 and Outlook 2003. Office 2007 is not affected and neither is the Office 2010 beta, according to a Microsoft spokeswoman. If the hotfix is not applied, users will see the warning: "Unexpected error occurred.
