I've recently upgraded from12.04 https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2241527 to 14.04, & went away on holiday a week. I'm back now. basically, my system "goes", but there are errors flashing up on my screen before i log in. I've discovered today how to access the boot-up log, but i am now wondering how i can repair / fix these errors. usually missing files. Can i do them in one command / process ? or do i need to fix each one - one at a time ? Here is a sample of my error report - I've used GREP. (showing 1 line before/after the error.) the full file has 98 lines I've looked & MOST 9if not all) of the errors refer to a directory called /freedesktop/hal/ i've googled this but am not sure what programme needs / uses this directory. Does anyone know how to fix this (assuming its just one process/programme to fix). Also is this broken programme useful/essential to running Ubuntu ? not provided Running RHN_REGISTER You would think something as simple as running rhn_register would just run and register for updates without any issues. There are times when this is not the case and today was one of them. The issue occurred when running rhn_register on RedHat EL 5.4 (Tikanga) servers when after selecting next on teh review screen I received the error. "Introspect error: The name org.freedesktop.Hal was not provided by any .service files" From the error I noticed Hal in the name and upon a friendly search in the RedHat forums noticed reference to haldaemon not running. So the correction is simple. # service haldaemon start Now re-run rhn_register and you are golden!!
