The suggestion was simple: change the display sleep delay to "Never". My wife's laptop wasn't set to sleep but the display was. I was having just this problem on a MacBook while the Mac Mini chugged away happily exporting an even bigger slideshow - both with new installations of iLife. Maybe the laptop sees a looming conflict between the sleep setting and the estimated time that it will need for the slideshow and just bogs down. For me it also froze the entire system and I had to force shutdown with the power button to get away from the stuck process.
