Git Pull Cannot Stat Permission Denied
minute: Sign up git rebase: “error: cannot stat 'file': Permission denied” up vote 107 down vote favorite 14 I'm using git, and made a small commit followed by a large one. I decided to use git rebase to squash the two git checkout permission denied commits together before pushing them. (I've never done this before.) So I did: git rebase -i HEAD~2 This gave me my editor, where I chose to pick the earlier commit and squash the later one. When I saved, git said: error: cannot stat 'filename': Permission denied Could not apply sha1 for later commit... initial line of text for that commit Now: Neither commit appears when I do git log. git status tells me I'm "Not currently on any branch." One file is git unable to create file permission denied windows listed as modified and in the index, and two files are listed as untracked. My first commit had just one file (I think), and my second commit had a good dozen. What happened!? How do I fix it? git git-rebase share|improve this question asked May 11 '11 at 21:33 Kyralessa 121k28139185 1 Are you, by and chance, using git on windows? –Charles Bailey May 11 '11 at 21:35 Yes. I run the commands in a DOS window. –Kyralessa May 11 '11 at 21:36 Are you running a virus checker? Sometimes poor quality virus checker programs cause issues like this. –Greg Hewgill May 11 '11 at 21:40 shrug Microsoft Forefront. But I've been using git for many weeks and never had a "cannot stat" problem before. Forefront isn't scanning at the moment. –Kyralessa May 11 '11 at 21:43 5 I had the issue with git checkout (so no abort possible as suggested by the accepted answer) but closing all my IDEs let me through. The second answer should be the accepted one –plus- Jan 4 '13 at 13:39 add a comment| 20 Answers 20 active oldest votes up vote 76 down vote accepted I've only ever seen this error on Windows and what it seems to mean is that something blocked git from modifying a file at the moment when it tried to a apply a patch. Windows tends to give processes exclusive access to files when i

Smartphones Fun Stuff Search site How to Fix Access is Denied, File May Be In Use, or Sharing Violation Errors in Windows Ever try to delete a file and get an Access is Denied error? Or maybe you're trying to copy or move a file http://www.online-tech-tips.com/software-reviews/how-to-fix-access-is-denied-file-may-be-in-use-or-sharing-violation-errors-in-windows/ or folder and you get a message stating the source file may be in use? This type http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowledgebase/articles/210938-access-denied-error-message of error can occur for several reasons: you do not have ownership of the file or folder and therefore cannot perform any actions on it or the operating system or another program is currently using it. You can usually figure out which situation you're involved with by taking a look at what exactly you're trying to do. If you get the Access is Denied or You don't currently permission denied have permission to access this folder message, then you're probably looking at a permissions problem. If you're not an Administrator on the computer, you're probably not going to be able to fix this issue, so first make sure you can get access to an admin account. Access Is Denied Error This particular error is normally caused by NTFS permissions, but it can also be caused by other issues like a corrupt user profile, encryption on the file or if the file is in use. We'll stat permission denied talk about file in use errors in the next section. To gain access to the file or folder, you'll need to have the correct permissions configured for your account. Before you start doing any work, you should try to click on the Continue button that will show up in Windows 7 and Windows 8 automatically. This will try to give your user account permissions to the folder as long as you are the owner. If you get the You have been denied permission to access this folder message after clicking Continue, that means you are not the owner and you'll have to first take ownership of the folder before you can change any permissions. Take Ownership of Files and Folders in Windows Taking ownership is unfortunately quite a process, so it's best to have ample time and patience before attempting this. To get started, you need to right-click on the file or folder, choose Properties and then go to the Security tab. If you have no access to the folder, you'll see a message stating you have to be an Administrator to view the security properties. Go ahead and click on Continue. This will pop up another dialog where you get the option to change the owner. In the Change owner to box, select your user account or Administrators. I personally choose my own account because that's the default behavior in Windows when you create a new folder/file. Also make sure to check the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects box. Click OK and you'll get anot
the file). You either do not have the access rights to read the file, or do not have access rights to create/overwrite the file. Network SecurityThis type of error commonly occurs when copying to a network share. On the computer that is sharing the folder over the network:- Run Windows File Explorer- Navigate to the folder you’re sharing- Right-click on the folder and select Sharing and Security... from the pop-up menu- Depending on how Windows XP is configured there are two different options:1) Tick the checkbox that says Allow network users to change my filesor2) Click on the Permissions button and make sure Full Control is tickedIf it still fails try removing the share and recreating it with Full Control / Allow network users to change my files. This will reset the file permissions.Note: it's likely that network access to files hosted on machines running later versions of Windows (by another networked machine running an earlier version of Windows) may be more problematic due to (more) restrictive security in the newer version of Windows, and/or security modes, access tokens, etc., that differ between the two systems). Older versions of Windows are generally less restrictive in that respect, so you may have more success installing on the machine with the newer Windows version and accessing the older machine/version's files over the network. Such a setup may thus be able to access the files on both sides more easily.Encrypted Blocked Files If you download a file, e.g. using Internet Explorer, to an NTFS volume, then the file may be marked as blocked by Windows. You can see if a file is blocked by right-clicking on it and selecting Properties from the pop-up menu. At the bottom of the General tab it will say if the file is blocked or not (This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer). You can click the Unblock button to unblock the file. If a file is both NTFS encrypted, and blocked, then you cannot copy the file from a remote computer. You must either
