I have a data partition mounted in fstab but it seems I cannot write downloads to it. Dropbox is on that partition and it does sync. here's my fstab: http://pastebin.com/vhPCmSsi and blkid: http://pastebin.com/uF5t7Yey ...the reason I suspect there is a problem in fstab is that I get a permission denied error for the downloads. Also, I can't copy local files to that partition. but then how is Dropbox granted permission? If I make an ls -lt it shows the owner and the permissions properly changed. However I still don't have permissions for writing there, if I execute mkdir test it says: mkdir: cannot create directory `test': Permission denied Any suggestions? That'll give it read write acess. –drN Oct 27 '12 at 15:18 Yes, I've tried that, the ownership is properly set –rfc1484 Oct 27 '12 at 16:38 that is rather strange because I didn't need to cchange anything in my fstab. However, I'll take a look and post my fstab here. –drN Oct 27 '12 at 17:06 When I connected my external hard drive and checked my /etc/fstab I didn't see any entry for my external hard drive. Did you use this HDD in a mac previously? If so, you'll have to turn off journaling. If not, despite the fact that you might get a little frustrated by this answer, check to see if you made any sytanx error in chown -R username:username /media/sdb1. –drN Oct 27 '12 at 17:08 Do these work? After mounting my Windows I try to make them mount every boot, so I type /etc/fstab. The bash tells me "/etc/fstab/ permission denied". What permission, and how do I fix it? I'm tired of mounting my hd every time. I'm just a user who wants to become an administrator, but who has AMDAthlon 4 950 MHz, RAM 256 mb, 8 mb CyberTech VC, ES1988 alegro sound card and who wants his Red Hat 9.0 on kernel 2.4.20-8 work smoothly ! ! ! It is not something you can execute. You need to load it in your favorite editor as root and edit it to hold the information to mount your windows partition.
