When I try to log in using FireFTP I get a 530 Permission Denied error. vsftpd.conf has been set to anonymous_enable=NO but when it was set to YES, I was able to successfully log in anonymously. Am I missing something? Should I be setting ownership of /var/www or something else? EDIT: I've tried taking root off of ftpusers but even when attempting to sign in with root I get a permission denied error. This would lead me to believe there's something wrong with my vsftpd or server configuration and not the way the user is set up. permissions ftp vsftpd share|improve this question edited Mar 16 at 17:11 Castaglia 1,8672522 asked Mar 31 '11 at 8:27 Nick 2401413 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote accepted I set up an FTP server in Ubuntu using something like this guide and mine works well: http://cviorel.easyblog.ro/2009/03/05/how-to-setup-vsftpd-ftp-on-ubuntu-linux Does anything here help? Normal sftp is also happening using same username and password –dig_123 Nov 26 '13 at 18:29 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote You should never connect as root over FTP. It is an old and insecure protocol and there really is no reason why you would want to use it as root. Look into ssh or sftp as alternatives. That said, if you really want to open this huge security hole, you will need to edit your /etc/vsftpd.conf file and add or uncomment this line: local_enable=YES I really cannot stress enough that you don't want to do this. FTP does not encrypt passwords, allowing this will send your root password unencrypted over the network. That is A Bad Idea. Please use sftp instead. share|improve this answer answered Nov 26 '13 at 18:35 terdon 33.5k66299 1 This is already uncommented. anonymou

I get 530 when I FTP to it from the same machine, and from another machine on the LAN. 530 permission denied How can I solve this error? (Update added below.) What I want: run an FTP server on a home computer so I can put backups on it from other machines (from same home LAN and also from outside) What I have: Windows Vista on a home computer DSL connection and dynamic DNS service either one of FileZilla Server or smallftpd, each configured with a user and a public directory, and the service started, and unblocked in the Vista firewall. Update: Login succeeds when connecting using local IP address, but not when using the dynamic IP. That would indicate an issue with the router or other kind of DNS-related stuff, but if that were the case then the FTP server wouldn't even respond, would it? It does respond but doesn't accept the login credentials -- I'm stumped! ftp share|improve this question edited Oct 7 '09 at 21:24 asked Oct 7 '09 at 20:57 Torben Gundtofte-Bruun 10.2k2276117 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted So you have an FTP running on a Vista machine and you have dynamic DNS setup on your router?
