What you want to do is to transfer them to your home directory (since you have no permissions to write to /). If path to your home is something like /home/erez try the following: scp My_file.txt user_id@server:/home/erez/ You can substitute the path to your home directory with the shortcut ~/, so the following will have the same effect: scp My_file.txt user_id@server:~/ You can even leave out the path altogether on the remote side; this means your home directory. scp My_file.txt user_id@server: That is, to copy the file to your desktop you might want to transfer it to /home/erez/Desktop/: scp My_file.txt user_id@server:/home/erez/Desktop/ or using the shortcut: scp My_file.txt user_id@server:~/Desktop/ or using a relative path on the remote side, which is interpreted relative to your home director

Copy/paste an exact transcript of the command entered and the response. What you have described makes no sense and since you paraphrased the exchange we can't tell what actually happened. –Jim Garrison Nov 4 '13 at 21:29 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted You need to use the -r for recursive copy and make sure you have write permissions to the destination. Try doing a touch /path/to/local/destination/file and see if you get permission denied. If so then use sudo scp to copy the files. share|improve this answer answered Nov 4 '13 at 21:49 Chris Hinshaw 3,84611539 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote I got the same issue. I use the username and password to scp files from windows to the username's account on ubuntu and get permision denied error. The reason is because one of the directory is owned by root. For example if the account is in /home/username then most likely /home is owned by root. If you change owner of /home then it may work. Try: sudo chown root: /folder share|improve this answer answered Nov 19 '14 at 0:44 user2824274 186 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote This can happen even if ssh works fine! The problem is Fi

You should take basic troubleshooting and report what you observe in order to let others help. –chingNotCHing Jul 23 '15 at 11:39 But if they are not correctly defined I will not be able to connect and log in this server at all but I can.. –Jason Paddle Jul 23 '15 at 11:43 e.g. if there's an entry of your local host's pub key in remote_host:/.ssh/authorized_keys, then you'd be authenticated with pki instead of inputting password. However, say if your local host's ip has recently changed, this would be failed.
