Cannot Open Session Permission Denied
and can't login to the box either on tty or via ssh. As soon as the user logs in the session terminates and in the message "login [1234] permission denied" is printed. The machine was set to autologin on KDE so that user autologs-in. Any Ideas? Update: I am not sure what has changed on the system, I am not the only one who has access to the box and according to everybody nothing has changed. The only thing that went wrong on ssh login permission denied the system was that it takes a backup of a DB on a different machine and there wasn't any space on it. I cleared all the space after some googling updated PAM, that solved the problem. But then the problem repeated when I check the system there wasn't any space again, cleared the system re-installed PAM to no avail. Upgraded the system from 12.1 to 12.3 but didn't help. There isn't a /var/log/secure log. The only relevant message is permission denied. Users are not locked on KDE I can login with any user but not on tty or ssh, can su/sudo. There are lot of files in /etc/pam.d/ which one do I need to check linux login pam share|improve this question edited Jul 21 '14 at 10:14 Tejas 1,58821532 asked Jun 27 '13 at 14:52 rojanu 10613 That's pretty vague problem description What have you done so far and what are the results? What's changed recently? etc... More information can help us get you to what you're after sooner. At this point all I can think to tell you is to check /var/log/secure to see if anything descriptive got printed there. –Bratchley Jun 27 '13 at 15:48 It might also be worthwhile to get the PAM configuration in case there's a problem there. I'd update your question with this information so people have more to work with. –Bratchley Jun 27 '13 at 15:50 This isn't enough to go on. Can you confirm

To explain my problem - finally I have to provide access to an embedded system running a custom debian linux on ARM. I have to grant access over SSH (Installed Openssh 6.0p1 with OpenSSL 0.9.8k) using PAM in combination with a one-time-password (OTPW library). I am faceing some problems now during the configuration, in fact i configurated the files as following: in /etc/pam.conf Code: # # The PAM configuration file for the `login' service # login auth requisite pam_securetty.so login auth required pam_nologin.so login auth sufficent pam_unix.so login auth required pam_unix.so login auth optional pam_group.so login account requisite pam_time.so login account required pam_unix.so login password required pam_cracklib.so retry=3 login password required pam_unix.so shadow md5 use_authtok login session required pam_unix.so # # The PAM configuration file for the `sshd' service # sshd auth required pam_otpw.so sshd session optional pam_otpw.so and in /etc/sshd_config Code: ChallengeResponseAuthentication yes PasswordAuthentication no UsePrivilegeSeparation no UsePAM yes but nothing happened. I can connect over SSH, but always with the default root password. i suppose my system isnt using PAM at all... what can i do to force the system to use PAM? thanks, simon 08-24-2012 #2 gettyUp View Profi

In some cases, this was working earlier but the problem came permission denied up after an update. This has been seen with various Windows SSH clients, like putty and smarterm, but not with the Linux SSH client itself. Resolution Edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. Verify the following setting:PasswordAuthentication yesWithout this, many ssh clients will be denied access if the user submits the password rather than using public key authentication. The comments in the sshd_config session permission denied file are potentially misunderstood for this parameter. It reads, "To disable tunneled clear text passwords, change to no here!". The 'clear text password' referred to here is still encrypted in the ssh tunnel, so is not visible to sniffers. In this case the term "tunneled clear text password" is only meant to imply the difference between the user typing in their password directly, versus submitting a key file. This issue can come up after some updates because in older versions of the SSHD package, this value defaulted to yes, whereas in newer versions of the package, it is defaulting to no. I have used Ubuntu 10.10's encryption to encrypt my home folder (thus encrypting my .ssh folder). This means that the OpenSSH doesn't have access to my .ssh folder. When I try to log into SSH before logging in on the local machine I get the following error: Code: jason@ONONWARA:~$ ssh jason@192.168.1.152 Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS NIHATI Permission denied (publickey). If I log onto the machine, then use SSH it works fine. I want to use key based login, so pleased don't suggest using a password. One way to get around this error would be use a different authorized_keys file, but I don't know of a way to do this. This is the contents of my sshd_config file: Code: # Package generated configuration file # See the sshd_config(5) manpage for details # What ports, IPs and protocols we listen for Port 22 # Use these options to restrict which interfaces/protocols sshd will bind to #ListenAddress :: #ListenAddress 0.0.0.0 Protocol 2 # HostKeys for protocol version 2 HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key Ho
