Cannot Create Remote File Winscp Permission Denied
WinSCP: Permission denied. Error code: 3 Error message from server: Permission denied [closed] up vote 2 down vote favorite 2 I am using WinSCP and keep on experiencing this error every time I try to replace/overwrite a file. I have been able to transfer/overwrite a file before with out any problem but not anymore. The exact error message: Cannot create remote file 'var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/..../myfilename.filepart'. sftp error code 3 permission denied Permission denied. Error code: 3 Error message from server: Permission denied I have tried changing the ownership which I was successful at because when I refreshed, from tomcat6, it is now under my login name. But I am still denied. This is giving me a very hard time testing our reports as I just need to see if it's already working i n the deployed app. I also tried tweaking some of the options in the WinSCP preferences such as Drag & Drop and Endurance but nothing made any difference. I reinstalled PuTTY and WinSCP, but nothing changed. UPDATE: I am able to replace my file by coming out 1 notch from the file path (ex. var/lib/myfolder/myproject/web-inf/report, back 1 notch to var/lib/myfolder/myproject/web-inf/) then type sudo chown myuser:myuser report -R but my reports will have errors, so I had to type sudo chown tomca6:tomcat6 report -R then the error will be cleared and I now can view my replaced file. This is very inconvenient as I have to do this every time. Is there anything I can do to fix this? thanks permission-denied winscp share|improve this question e

I have an SFTP server where I'm only giving a particular user list permissions for a folder tree up until they get to the subdirectory they actually need read permissions to. My user is running into issues when using WinSCP, as it tries to open a folder using SSH_FXP_LSTAT, http://winscp.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22274 which to my knowledge requires read permissions. FileZilla works fine, as it only uses SSH_FXP_OPEN. I'm not a frequent WinSCP user, myself. I tend to stick with FileZilla as an FTP/SFTP client. Is there any way to get WinSCP to do a regular OPEN instead of an LSTAT? I really want to avoid giving the user read permissions to all parent folders in order to allow WinSCP to work. To generate log file, enable logging, log in to your server and do the operation and only the operation that causes the error. Submit the log with your post as an attachment. One solution is to change the ownership of the '/www/' folder using chown. That way, you can make the user you log in with into the owner instead of 'root' being owner. I am using an instance of Amazon Linux rather than Ubuntu, but this command worked for me: sudo chown -R -v ec2-user /var/www/ The user 'ec2-user' is the user I log in with. What I have tried is 1) The Latest WinSCP version 2) I was and always used WinSCP v3.3.0 & v3.7.6 but I recently noticed quite a few posts that pointed to a bug with the earlier version (jpg win3.3.0) therefore I tried the latest WinSCP which did not resolve the Permission denied issue, so I stuck with WinSCP 3.5.5 which fixed that bug. 3) I have tried other clients i.e such as Bitvise but still when trying to trf files to the win7 machine I get Permission denied error code 3. 4) FreeSSHd 1.3.1 jpg I am using NT Authentication and have set public key to allowed with Shell, SFTP, and Tunnel all selected.– the key was generated from the putty key generator. 5) The only programme that works as a server on the problematic win7 machine is FreeSSHd 1.3.1, I have tried other programmes i.e Open sshd, I have also tried installing Cygwin spending weeks trying to get this to work but failed, so I am stuck now and I do now need some help. Can somebody help to point me to getting this Permission denied issue away from my win7 machine – WinSCP Locally I CAN go destination to source copy / delete or move, - but I can NOT go source to destination ans that route give me Permission denied error code 3 ( in short the right hand column is off limits. I have been trying to resolve this spending many hours every day for the last 3 months reading posts and trying various things bu
