Starting my computer I receive the message "While Initializing device CONFIGMG: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer." After doing some research it seems I need to perform a BIOS upgrade. Guaranteed this is basically Spanish to me, I followed the directions on the Microsoft website [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/187612] under more information. It said to "Force APM 1.0" On my computer, it didn't have the option to do that. The computer will only run in Safe Mode. My question is, besides how to fix this problem, I have important files on the computer that I would hate to see deleted, how do I retrieve these files? Thanks in advance for your help. You need to restart you My Dell 933r (Windows Me) shows the following error at startup: While Initializing device CONFIGMG: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer. I have looked up the error using various search engines and the Windows knowledge base. Most answers to similar questions refer to a Windows http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?157819-While-Initializing-device-CONFIGMG-Windows-Protection-Error-You-need-to-restart-you 98 problem with the same error message. The first two fixes suggest that there is an AGP-PCI interface problem, but I only have a PCI slot. The second fix refers to a specific power management option in system properties, but I have no such option when i try to find it in system properties. Any other suggestions? I have a brand new BIOS. I flashed the ROM (thanks for the help everyone), unfortunately, now I can only boot to safe mode. I keep getting an error "While initializing device CONFIGMG" then it says "Windows protection error." HELP! I even tried putting my blank HD in and running windows setup, and it wouldn't let me install win98 on my blank HD because compression or LAN was initialized where it shouldn't have been. The only thing I can think is that I used the K7S5A LAN version, but I wasn't supposed to. . . I do have the built-in LAN card. Should I have used the other version? Or, there was another thing on ECS's site to "Rename" your LAN card. But that doesn't work either. Please help--don't try to e-mail, though. My @home doesn't work right now (on the "broken" computer).
