Starting my computer I receive the message "While Initializing device CONFIGMG: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer." After doing some research it seems I need to perform a BIOS upgrade. Guaranteed this is basically Spanish to me, I followed the directions on the Microsoft website [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/187612] under more information. It said to "Force APM 1.0" On my computer, it didn't have the option to do that. The computer will only run in Safe Mode. My question is, besides how to fix this problem, I have important files on the computer that I would hate to see deleted, how do I retrieve these files? Thanks in advance for your help. Win98SE gives "Windows protection error" during startup Okay, first things first -- my main desktop machine is refusing to start Windows except in Safe Mode. I've been completely through the Microsoft Knowledge Base topics related to "Windows protection error -- you need to restart your machine" without gaining anything (though there were a couple suggestions I couldn't carry out because I don't have CD or network access in Safe Mode or DOS). Unsure if this is related or not, but in Safe Mode, all hard and floppy disks are also reporting they're in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode and there's a warning that "Compability Mode paging reduces system performance" -- I was not in compatibility mode previously; there is no NOIDE key in the registry, and nothing changed when I removed the three BAD_IDE entries I found there (done based on other discussions of that error that I found with a Google search). This error started after a power failure; my system has been slightly flakey for a long time (continuously upgraded from DOS 3.31, via DOS 5, DOS 6/6.1/6.22, Windows 3.0/3.1, Windows 95, and
