I will be your expert. This error occurs primarily with pdf formatted documents because of the size and format of them. It is caused by either a bad formatter board or the firmware. I would recommend that you update the printers firmware and see if it corrects it. If it does not you will need to replace the formatter board which will cost between $50 and $150 depending on whether you get a new one or used one off e-bay. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Pinterest Share by Email × Question about HP LaserJet 2420 Printer 4 Answers 49.4C02 Service Error Our printer HP LaserJet 2420n was working great for nearly a year. Then today, between print jobs, it went to this error (see subject) on the screen. I called HP tech support since its still under warranty and spoke to someone NOT helpful. Basically she said we had to update the firmware. She faxed me cheat sheet on how to update this. However, it claimed that when I put in the IP address of the printer into internet explorer, I would see a folder I would then drag a copy of an .RFU file (I had downloaded this per her instructions) into port1. There was only a link to a port 1 but no folder. Anyway, when I dragged this RFU file to this link, it would switch the window to a bunch of computer code. Then she would have me turn off the printer and turn it back on. It would look all normal, and say ready. THEN, it would say "Processing job" and the data light would flash for about 30 seconds, then nothing happened and that was it. It would give me that same Service error again. She then had me pull out the printer's memory and put it back in and turn the printer back on. Still didn't work. And now when I power up the printer, it has a blank display screen (which means all my settings are lost!). That's when she decided I needed the printer repaired and my options were 1. pay $69 to get a new one shipped to me and return this bad one or 2. Work with a local HP authorized repairman-FREE or 3. Have them ship me a prepaid box, then send it back, and then wait for HP to fix it and eventually return it. FREE I have chosen option 2 and the repairman is coming tomorrow. However, I may need to wait a week for parts! Any help to fix this sooner would be great as I need to get this back up and running...its our networked workhorse printer for my entire 6 person office.
