TITLE: Connect to Server Cannot connect to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\SQLEXPRESS. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=-1&LinkId=20476 BUTTONS: OK I have checked that remote connections are allowed on the server. I have confirmed TCP/IP is enabled and configured in SQL Server Configuration to allow connections on the external IP to 1433. I have also used Wireshark from my local machine and I can see requests for 1433 UDP going to the remote server. But using Wireshark on the remote server shows no inbound connection requests for 1433 UDP or anything from my external IP (with filtering to remote RDP from results). This makes me think it is a firewall issue. The server is hosted by an external company who have control over the PIX in front of our server. I need to troubleshoot this as much as possible myself as the hosting company have no clue what they are doing. sql sql-server sql-server-2008 sql-server-exp

I use management studio to connect to the database engine. I type in the server name: "tcp:localhost\SQL2012" and I receive this error message: (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) This post by the SQL Server team seems to be really useful, in it they sql server error suggest testing out the SqlBrowser service using PortQry. When I do, I get this info: Querying target system called: localhost Attempting to resolve name to IP address... Name resolved to 127.0.0.1 querying... UDP port 1434 (ms-sql-m service): LISTENING or FILTERED Sending SQL Server query to UDP port 1434... Server's response: ServerName MSWART7 InstanceName SQL2012 IsClustered No Version 11.0.5058.0 tcp 52329 ♥K K P☺K 5 - 2 1 qK 1 4 rK 8 7 0☺ 1 qK ==== End of SQL Server query response ==== And sure enough, I'm able to connect to the database when I specify the server name "tcp:localhost,52329" I'm not sure what I'm missing. SQL Browser seems to be functioning and ports and firewalls seem to be open or irrelevant (I'm trying to connect to localhost). Where do I look next? sql-server sql-server-2012 connectivity share|improve this question edited Jul 26 '15 at 15:50 Aaron Bertrand♦ 113k14195333 asked Jul 1 '15 at 16:46 Michael J Swart 88321123 If you use (local) or 127.0.0.1 or MSWART7 or the actual IP address instead of localhost, does anything change? What network protocols are enabled in Configuration Manager? (I don't know that you can specify tcp: successfully when using a named instance name, which implies Shared Memory. I can't connect on any of mine that way - I either need to use tcp: with a port, or no tcp: with a name.)
SQL (be it any version of SQL) and we always spend some time to figure out the exact issue. Every time we need to look int where should we start looking for the problem. This post lists the basic issues that can cause this error and I will keep this post updated in case any more reasons are found. Below are the most common issues due to which we get this error Check the Server name - First and the most common thing to check is to ensure there are no typo errors for the server name. Accessibility to Server - The server should also be accessible from the network computer, we are trying to access SQL Server. Check the Instance name - Once the server is checked for correctness, the next thing to check is the SQL Server instance name. Check for typo errors in the Instance name and also ensure that the Instance exists on the server Remote Connections enabled on SQL Server - Ensure SQL Server is allowed for remote connections Mixed Mode Authentication Enabled - Ensure Mixed-mode authentication is enabled on SQL Server you are trying to connect to SQL Browser Service should be running - On the server, SQL browser service should be running. You can check this from Services window on the server. Firewall is configured on server to allow sqlbrowser.exe and port 1434 under exception. After following all the above steps, the error should be resolved. [Original Source] Hope you like this post. You can get connected with me on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn also.
