Solved SQL State 28000 - Error 18456 Logon Failed For User Posted on 2007-06-26 MS SQL Server 1 Verified Solution 15 Comments 43,330 Views Last Modified: 2010-02-16 I have a SQL https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2121736 database (SQL 2000) that has an Access2000 front end to it. Everything works ok for me, but for others it is not. When they click on the table or the report, they get "Connection Failed - SQLState: "28000" SQL Server Error 18456. Login failed for user...." I have read the previous posts on this error and have tried most of them. I am missing something. Under the ODBC connection on the https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/22659544/SQL-State-28000-Error-18456-Logon-Failed-For-User.html client, I have the User DSN and System DSN set up for both of the databases on the SQL server. I also have the Access database set up under User DSN. The user is set up as a user on the server where the SQL database resides, with the same permissions that I have. Under the database in Enterprise Manager, the user is set up under "Logins". I have not deleted all of the table links and the ODBC connection, I'm not sure how to do this. The user is able to get into the Access program by unchecking Trusted Connection and typing in her password, but this is a pain. How do I get this to be automatic. I have compared my settings to hers and they seem the same. 0 Question by:sfrisk Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 14 Best Solution bytwoboats No problem. Is the windows user in question a domain user? And have you added the sql login as exactly the same, including the domain reference? Is the login on sql set to use windows authentication? The step failed. Solution: Step 1: Check the source SQL sql server server agent logon service account name All programs -> SQL server 2008 -> Configuration Tools -> SQL server configuration manager. Go to the SQL server agent -> properties -> Check the logon tab and find the account name. Step 2: Check the same is available in the target SQL server. Under the security tab ->logins. If it’s not available add the domain user with necessary connection failed sqlstate permission on your target machine. I hope this will help someone. Both of the servers have two different database that will be joined together using SQL Server Agent. However, during this activity SQL Server is throwing a Log In Failed Error. The job failed. The job was invoked by User somedomain\someuser. The last step to run was step 2 [somedatabasename]. The job was requested to start at step 1 [somejobstepname]. Executed as user: NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT. Login failed for user 'somedomainname\servername'. [SQLSTATE 28000] [Error 18456]. The step failed. Can anyone help me with this? I have searched the internet and some experts suggested that this is due to my user ID (i.e. \kanchan.barua) and server agent user ID (i.e. \SQLSERVERAGENT) being two different user ID. Hence I tried to change from \SQLSERVERAGENT to \kanchan.barua. But it is also showing an error. The error reads: WMI Provider Error. Access is denied. [0x80070005]. How can I solve this error? PS: One thing I forgot to mention. I can normally run a query using both the database in separate server. However whenever try to use server job agent, this connection problem is showing. sql-server sql login share|improve this question asked Mar 15 '14 at 13:33 Sadat Mainuddin 1113 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote Run "SQL Server Configuration Manager" Select "SQL Server Services" Right Click "SQL Server Agent" and choose properties On the "l
