Sql Server Error 26 Client Unable To Establish Connection
Michael Aspengren - MSFTJune 21, 20102 0 0 0 When connecting to SQL Server and when the connection fails the reason error 26 in sql server 2008 r2 for the error may sometimes be a bit unclear. For this example I have a SQL Server 2008 instance called Spike2008 running on a machine called SpikeSrv2008 (running on Windows Server 2008). So https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/944390 the full name of the server is SpikeSrv2008\Spike2008. If trying to connect to it from a command prompt using sqlcmd it will show the same error for both incorrect server name and incorrect instance name. Incorrect server name: C:\Users\maspeng>sqlcmd -S SpikeSrv2009\Spike2008 HResult 0xFFFFFFFF, Level 16, State 1 SQL Server Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 10.0 : A https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/spike/2010/06/21/error-locating-serverinstance-specified-xffffffff-sqlsrv32-to-the-rescue/ network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. Incorrect instance name: C:\Users\maspeng>sqlcmd -S SpikeSrv2008\Spike2009 HResult 0xFFFFFFFF, Level 16, State 1 SQL Server Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 10.0 : A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. As we can see, the errors are identical. However, this is an ideal situation since we know that either the server name or the instance name is wrong. But if you are not sure which one is incorrect (we are assuming that we know that the server is up and running and can be connected to from other machines). What you can do to get a bit closer to what is happening is to create an ODBC connection to the server that you cannot connect to. Click “Start”, select “Run” and type odbcad32.exe or run it directly from C:\Windows\System32\odbcad32.exe
10 Average: 2.6/5] Sometimes you may see "SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified" error message when connecting to a SQL Server and don't know where to start. In most forums people say this is because remote https://sqlbak.com/blog/sql-network-interfaces-error-26-error-locating-serverinstance-specified/ connection is not enabled on the server. This is not exactly correct. Actually, this error https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH230381.html message gives customers a very specific information and the solution is quite simple. First of all, you get this error message only if you are trying to connect to a SQL Server named instance. For a default instance you never see this. Why? Because even if we have failed at this stage (i.e. error locating server/instance specified), we will continue to sql server try connect using default values, e.g default TCP port 1433, default pipe name for Named Pipes. You may see others error messages due to failure later, but not this error message. Every time client makes a connection to SQL Server named instance, we will send a SSRP UDP packet to the server machine UDP port 1434. We need this step to know configuration information of the SQL instance, e.g., protocols enabled, TCP port, pipe name etc. Without error locating server this information, a client does know how to connect to the server and it fails with this specific error message. In other wors, the reason that we get this error message is the client stack could not receive SSRP response UDP packet from SQL Browser. It's easy to resolve the issue. Here are the steps: Make sure your server name is correct, e.g., no typo on the name. Make sure your instance name is correct and there is actually such an instance on your target machine. (Try to use a connection string like .
