MUST_CHANGE is ON. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:15128) Problem: Recently one of my user reported the issue that, He is getting password change message while login to SQL Server. But sql error 15128 he does not want to change the password as he has already sql server error 15128 configured at the many places. While turning off the Password Expiration message, I got the below error. The CHECK_POLICY microsoft sql server error 15128 and CHECK_EXPIRATION options cannot be turned OFF when MUST_CHANGE is ON. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15128) Solution: To fix the issue you MUST have to change the password first without changing sql server user must change password at next login in password policy options. The good thing it that you can change the password to be the same as the existing one. -:) But still you have to change the password -:) what a logic!!! You can do it from SSMS GUI as well, but I always prefer to use the scripts as it is giving me flexibility of customization. That was

the another reason I am in the support of open source software you have flexibility to add your ideas. Let's go to fix the issue. In the below step I am giving the same password, to fix "User Must Change Password" flag. USE Master GO ALTER LOGIN [Login Name] WITH PASSWORD = 'Same Password' GO Now let's turn off the passowrd policy. ALTER LOGIN [Login Name] WITH CHECK_POLICY = OFF, CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF; Share this:Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to email (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Like this:Like Loading... Both ways gave me the error. This is what I did to get around the issue. I logged in to SSMS using the sql account. When prompted to change the password I did. The sql account had sysadmin role. I opened up the sql account login and unchecked the 2 options for password expiration and the other option and it worked without error. with all that said, I am wondering if it has something to do with the security of the user who logged that defined the sql account. That login should have been able to make that change. Post #806031 K. Brian KelleyK. Microsoft Sql Server ? If you ever meet this nice Sql Error, 15128 in Microsoft Sql Error you must do these http://how-to-code-net.blogspot.com/2012/11/how-to-solve-error-15128-in-microsoft.html next steps. At least they worked for me :) First I want to https://stevenxvii.wordpress.com/2015/04/04/fix-the-check_policy-and-check_expiration-options-cannot-be-turned-off-when-must_change-is-on-microsoft-sql-server-error-15128/ explain which is the scenario. You are logged with Windows Authentication and you created a new sql login. Now you want to disable Enforce Password Policy. When you want to do that Sql tells you that you can not save the user, a new password must be set. Strange...so: double click sql server on new login created, leave the check boxes checked(enforce password policy and enforce password expiration) and change user's passwordtemporally to what ever you want, click OK then reopen and uncheckenforce password policy, enforce password expiration; Press OK finally you reopen the user and specify the password you want Test it ;) Hope this will help you. 04/04/201521/10/2015 by Steven Nguyễn Yesterday I received a report of issue from one of my customer stated that he couldn’t access to the SQL Server, I checked and found that the account was set with “Enforce password expiration”, and “User must change password at next login”. When I tried to change the password and uncheck all the checkboxes (shown below) then got the dialog. Yes. “The CHECK_POLICY and CHECK_EXPIRATION options cannot be turned OFF when MUST_CHANGE is ON. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15128)”. Oops, my bad, using the GUI I changed the password first (without changing in password policy options), and unchecked the checkboxes later, each step would be done separately and great, everything works like a charm. But I still want to make it by using command line by doing the following using the “New Query” To change password USE master GO ALTER LOGIN [login name] WITH PASSWORD = ‘same password’ GO And then turn off the password policy ALTER LOGIN [login name] WITH CHECK_POLICY = OFF, CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF; GO That’s it, everything done.
