MSSQLServer and SQL Agent SQL Server > SQL Server Security Question 0 Sign in to sql server service not starting vote hi I am intalling SQL 2008 standard with SP1 on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. I installed as "local service account" for MSSQLServer http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic962384-391-1.aspx (SQL database engine) and SQL agent. But I want to change to "service account" as [domain\svc_XXX] for MSSQLserver and SQL agent. I add the [domain\svc_XXX] in local security policy - "Log as a service" and also add in SSMS - Security - New Login (windows authentication. When I started the https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/0bf836db-84f8-41d9-9890-68a3eb49f1f5/error-17058-unable-to-start-a-service-account-on-mssqlserver-and-sql-agent?forum=sqlsecurity MSSQLserver and SQL agent using the [domain\svc_XXX], I got an error 17058. Initerrlog: could not open error log file." Operating system error=3 (The system cannot find the path specified). I don't know where else to look at.. Also, how do I find the cumulative service pack for SQL server 2008 standard? thanks Irene Tuesday, August 17, 2010 9:13 PM Reply | Quote All replies 0 Sign in to vote When changing the Service account where did you change it? If you used the Windows Service console, you made an error. In SQL Server when changing service accounts (from 2005+) you HAVE to use SQL Server Configuration Manager, because there are permissions that are missed. Like indicated by your errors, give that a try. Tuesday, August 17, 2010 10:03 PM Reply | Quote 0 Sign in to vote Going by the error message, it states that the
SERVER - Event 17058 - initerrlog: Could not Open Error Log File August 5, 2016Pinal DaveSQL1 commentIf you have ever interacted with me or taken my services, you would notice that I always ask http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2016/08/05/sql-server-event-17058-initerrlog-not-open-error-log-file/ for ERRORLOG in almost all of my contact with my client. Once of my friend contacted me and when I asked for ERRORLOG, he informed that there is no ERRORLOG https://www.eukhost.com/forums/forum/technical-support/windows-dedicated-server-hosting-discussion/20120-the-sql-server-sqlexpress-service-terminated-with-service-specific-error-17058-0x42a2 file and SQL is not getting started. I suggested him that we should analyze event log for further details, after interestingly, we found the following details in the event sql server 17058 about initerrlog: Could not Open Error Log File.Log Name: Application Source: MSSQLSERVER Event ID: 17058 Task Category: Server Level: Error Description: initerrlog: Could not open error log file ". Operating system error = 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). We finally found that the error occurs due to the insufficient privilege of SQL Server Service Account in the sql server the Log directory: E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\LogHere is the fix of the issue.Start SQL Server Configuration manager.Click to select ‘SQL Server Services' from the left menu options. On the right panel, right click on ‘SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)' and click ‘Properties'. You may want to choose correct service.Click ‘Startup Parameters' tab. Note the location after -e parameter.Browse the Log location " E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.MSSQLSERVER \MSSQL\Log".Right click on the folder "Log" and click Properties and then to visit to "Security" tab. Now, check SQL Server service account permission on this folder and give proper access to this folder. Now, Restart the SQL Server service. If you face the same error again, try to change highly privileged service account like "Local System".After giving permission, we were able to start the SQL Service.
