These files below are in the directory but the problem is that when I run the query, it gives me this error: Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Line 1 Unable to open the physical file "C:\Murach\SQL Server 2008\Databases\AP.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". I searched but I do not know exactly what the problem is, so I posted this question. sql sql-server share|improve this question edited Feb 22 at 21:25 MAbraham1 77931530 asked Aug 17 '13 at 8:30 dijai jijfs 322146 If the backup file exists already, please make sure it does not have the "read only" attribute, in addition to making sure that the service has the write permission. –tubelius Jun 20 at 11:09 add a comment| 10 Answers 10 active oldest votes up vote 49 down vote accepted SQL Server database engine service account must have permissions to read/write in the new folder. Check out this To fix, I did the following: Added the Administrators Group to the file security permissions with full control for the Data file (S:) and the Log File (T:). Attached the database and it works fine. share|improve this answer edited Apr 11 '14 at 7:00 user3414693 answered Aug 17 '13 at 8:37 Rahul Tripathi 101k1593172 4 Sometimes SQL server will run under a different user group other than Admin

Posted by Anders Rask on 6/30/2015 at 2:37 AM The workaround for this (by design) behaviour, is to run Management Studio as Administrator Posted by daniel.john.wolf on 2/10/2014 at 12:33 PM I can confirm this still occurs on windows server 2008 R2 Standard using (localdb)\v11.0. In my case the AD user was part of the local Administrators group but would still attach the mdf database as read-only despite the file having full-control access to Administrators. Giving the AD user explicit permissions to the file corrected the problem. The comment from Bryant E. Byrd below is spot on.Please consider reopening this bug. The servers are linked via crossover. I am using this setup to practice my log shipping before I move to the production sql server express databases. I am using the wizard to complete the log shipping. The primary server SQLCOM1 is to backup and restore the DB on the secondary server SQLCOM2\SQL_Data using the default folders after the restore. SQLCOM2\SQL_Data has been shared and I have permissions for most of the default SQL groups as well as a user 'connect' and the local admin. When I go to execute the log shipping it throws the following:BackupDiskFile::CreateMedia: Backup device '\\SQLCOM2\SQL_Data\AdventureWorks.bak' failed to create. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.).I am working with SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition SP1. SERVER -Fix Error - Cannot open backup device. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.) December 8, 2014Pinal DaveSQL, SQL Server, SQL Tips and Tricks10 commentsThis has to be the most popular error in taking database backups. There are many reasons for this error and there are different ways to resolve it. I recently faced this error and for a while I was taking backup and found a very interesting solution to the problem. The error was as mentioned below:Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device ‘d:\Log\aw.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. Personally, I know this error happens whenThere is no directory with LogThere is not enough space on drive d:\There is not enough permissions on d:\Log driveIn my case all of the above were not the reason for above error. The error was there because of the file was read only. There was already another backup file which existed in the folder with the name aw.bak and it was marked as read only. Due to the same reason, my backup was failing. Once I removed the checkbox for reading only, the backup was successful. Here are few other blog posts related to this error, which I have written earlier.SQL SERVER – FIX – ERROR : Msg 3201, Level 16 Cannot open backup device .
