Do you have some rolling back transactions at the moment? Also have you already run this command in another SSMS window that might still be open? I'm wondering (pure speculation) whether that might take a lock that blocks other attempts but it is still waiting before the database can actually be put into single_user mode. –Martin Smith Jan 12 '11 at 19:38 1 @Martin - fair enough. I must thinking of something else or losing my mind. either one is quite possible –codingbadger Jan 12 '11 at 19:53 @thank you very much everyone, i restarted SSMS and was able to kill everyone –JOE SKEET Jan 12 '11 at 19:54 Could be intellisense. I deleted an incomplete query that had squiggly lines trying to access the database and then it worked. –An Alien Mar 12 '14 at 5:36 add a comment| 6 Answers 6 active oldest votes up vote 253 down vote accepted Af

A small pop up window appeared and showed Query Executing..... for sometime and then threw an error saying Database is in use cannot take it offline. From which I gathered there are some active connections to that database so I tried to execute the following query USE master GO ALTER DATABASE My_DatabaseName SET OFFLINE WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE GO Again at this point the SSMS showed Query Executing..... for a sometime and then threw the following error: Msg 5061, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 ALTER DATABASE failed because a lock could not be placed on database 'My_DatabaseName'. Try again later. Msg 5069, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 ALTER DATABASE statement failed. After this I could not connect to the database through SSMS. and when I tried to Take it offline using SSMS it threw an error saying: Database is in Transition. Try later ..... At this point I simply could'nt touch the database anything I tried it returned the same error message Database is in Transition. I got on google read some questions where people had faced s

I'm stuck in Single failed for database User Mode and can't get out! Posted on 7 April 2014 Comments Briefcase Print So, here’s a silly little take on a serious end-user issue where no-one could access the production database. Got a call from a client recently. Like something out of a LifeAlert® commercial: “Help! I'm stuck in single user mode and can't get out! “ I figured this one was a no-brainer, but it turned out to be a little trickier than expected. The first thought was to walk the user through using the GUI via SSMS to simply switch back to multi-user. Of course this did not work, and if another process is accessing the database in single-user mode, you wouldn’t be able to access it anyway. So figured no worries, let's have the user do it via TSQL. Let’s take a look who or what is in the database. – Execute sp_who or sp_who2. Not happening! So in order to figure out what process is holding up the database and get the SPID, we can execute: Use Master GO Select * from master.sys.sysprocesses Where spid > 50 And dbid=DB_ID (‘StuckDB’)) -- replace with your database name Once you identified the spid to KILL, you can simply execute: KILL 85 – replace the spid with the one returned (do not use 85 unless it's the actual spid identified) Then try to bring it back into multi-user roleALTERDATABASE StuckDbSET MULTI_USERGO To furthe
