When this file is out of date, Server 2003 and perhaps SP2 on XP will actually disable the TCP/IP protocol for SQL Server to limit an attack. The link below will take you to a fix that will examine your install of SQL Server, then apply appropriate updates. This will update the DBNETLIB.DLL which is responsible for managing the TCP/IP protocol for SQL Server. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en -------------------------------------------------------------------------Normal chaos will be resumed as soon as possible. Server ConnectivityDecember 19, 200574 0 0 0 I recently worked on three customer issues. In all those https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sql_protocols/2005/12/19/vss-sql-server-does-not-exist-or-access-denied/ cases, customers were not able to backup databases using Microsoft Volume http://serverfault.com/questions/128110/dbnetlibconnectionopen-connect-sql-server-does-not-exist-or-access-denie Shadow Copy Service (VSS). MSDEWriter does not show up with “vssadmin list writers”. And VSS logs the following error message in event log: Sqllib error: OLEDB Error encountered calling IDBInitialize::Initialize. hr = 0x80004005. MSDEWriter uses MDAC SQLOLEDB to make connections to all SQL instances installed on a machine. VSS finds SQLserverinstances and the instance names by enumrating running SQL server services on the box. It sql server error uses the default protocol to connect the servers. In order for MSDEWriter to work correctly, it must be able to connect all SQL server instances of interests. That is, if you have 5 instances and fail to connect to only one of the instances, MSDEWriter will not work. MSDEWriter only works with local instances. We can ignore any possible firewall issue as this is local connection. In the first case, client shared memory protocol is disabled by the customreunexpectedly. One of the SQL instances installed on the customer machine is WMSDE. As we know, WMSDE can only listen on shared memory protocol. Clients can only connect to a WMSDE instance using shared memory, which is disabled in the customer's box. Enabling the sharedmemory protocol using SQL Server Client Network Utility fixes this problem. The second case was due to an outdated alias. The customer had an alias defined previously but forgot to remove it when configuration changes. This alias forces connections to one ofStart here for a quick overview of the site Help Center Detailed answers to any questions you might have Meta Discuss the workings and policies of this site About Us Learn more about Stack Overflow the company Business Learn more about hiring developers or posting ads with us Server Fault Questions Tags Users Badges Unanswered Ask Question _ Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. Can you access that SQL server any other way? Is it only the ASP app that can't access it? –Sean Howat Mar 31 '10 at 15:07 Yes, the remote connections are enabled in SQL server. The database connection string works but it stops couple of times during the day and it gives an error Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80004005' [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Don't know why? If you refresh the asp page, it works but it's annoying. Any idea why it's doing it? Yhanks. –shah Mar 31 '10 at 18:40 It seems strange that the connection string would just stop working a few times a day. Is it at a specific time or is it random? Does the outage last for any period of time? –Sean Howat Mar 31 '10 at 19:11 This could be a network issue. You may need to run a trace using something like Wireshark on the webserver to capture the packets. Then, when you exp
