SA I received following email from one of the user who received following error.Msg 15151, Level 16, State 1, Line msg 15151 level 16 state 1 line 1 cannot find the object 2 Cannot alter the login ‘sa', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.Fix/Workaround/Solution: This error had occurred because of insufficient rights. Please read my previous post here before reading
"cannot Alter The User" "because It Does Not Exist Or You Do Not Have Permission"
further article.SA is system admin user and it is the highest level of user in system. If any user have to modify the permissions of SA that user needs to have higher or equivalent rights as SA user. Users member of systemadmin group are can only change the rights of SA user.First adding any user to systemadmin role and then using the same user to modify cannot alter the server role 'sysadmin', because it does not exist or you do not have permission. system admin's tool will fix the issue.Reference : Pinal Dave (http://blog.SQLAuthority.com) Tags: SQL Error Messages, SQL Scripts, SQL Server Security1Related Articles SQL SERVER - FIX : Error 7311 - You may receive an error message when you try to run distributed queries from a 64-bit SQL Server 2005 client to a linked 32-bit SQL Server 2000 server or to a linked SQL Server 7.0 server May 9, 2008Pinal Dave Identify Used Space in Log File- Interview Question of the Week #090 September 25, 2016Pinal Dave SQL Server 2016 - Enhancements with TempDB December 30, 2015Pinal Dave 20 comments. Out of the box, an instance of MSSQL 2008 R2 (Express Edition with advanced services) is also pre-installed to manage SBSMonitoring. Installation is apparently in mixed mode. I am able to access via Server Management Studio, using a Windows logon https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/28425440/Reset-MSSQL-sa-password.html (domain-admins). However, access is very limited. An sa SQL logon seems to be needed. But I have no way of knowing the sa SQL logon password. I tried re-setting the sa password (while connected using the Windows logon). Unsurprisingly, it failed with the following message; "Cannot alter the login 'sa', because it does not exist or you do not have permission. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15151)" Nor could I add a new logon and give it a sysadmin role. Given this situation, would an Expert be kind enough to provide some help. I recall vaguely that this may be achieved via SQLCMD . But I hesitate to try without some expert guidance.
