The following code var cn = Server.createObject("adodb.connection"); var cnString = "Provider=Microsoft.SQLSERVER.CE.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + Server.mapPath("employees.sdf"); Response.write(cnString); // for debug only cn.open(cnString); throws "80004005 Unspecified error" on the last line. The SqlServer Compact 4.0 is obviously installed on the machine I am trying to run this on. I am able to connect to this db using SQL Management Studio just fine. The path in Data Source= is correct. I also gave Everyone full permission to the folder where the file resides just in case. Not sure what else to try. sql-server asp-classic sql-server-ce adodb share|improve this question edited Dec 6 '11 at 16:22 Cheran Shunmugavel 6,12211732 asked Dec 6 '11 at 15:16 Ilia G 6,8661849 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote It sounds like some access denied error, could you try with a full path instead - see http://erikej.blogspot.com/2011/02/access-sql-server-compact-4-with-asp.html - you could use ProcMon from Sysinternals to check if it is an access denied error. share|improve this answer answered Dec 6 '11 at 16:13 ErikEJ 23.1k23064 Thanks for your

I would like to have additional information in the following areas: what http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17631532/sql-server-compact-edition-open-fails-with-e-fail-unspecified-error-with-vs-2005 is the process for changing from SQL Server to SQL Server Compact Edition this process needs to be for an older C++ application using ADO do I need to change from ADO to instantiating a COM object (please tell me it ain't so) what should the Provider= value be for SQL Server Compact Edition 2005 Things I have done: I have installed SQL Server Compact Edition 4.0 though I am not sure it was necessary I have tried various connect strings I am currently using Provider=Microsoft.SQLSERVER.CE.OLEDB.4.0 which throws an exception I have read enough Microsoft web pages that are unhelpful so please do not provide a link to any of the short cryptic articles that appear to assume a modern source code base. I have spent enough time perusing connection strings at connectionstring.com so please do not provide any links to there. I have an old C++ and C application that has a DLL which accesses an SQL Server database using a connect string which works with several versions of SQL Server (the old MSDE as well as the new SQL Server Express 2012). ConnectionStringNoDB = L"Provider=MSDASQL;DRIVER=
