Sign up Diagnosing Connection to SQL Server up vote 1 down vote favorite 1 I'm trying to create an ODBC connection to SQL Server, but when i do, i get error: Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 10060 [Microsoft][ODBC_SQL Server https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb326282.aspx Driver][TCP/IP Sockets] COnnectionOpen (Connect()). Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 17 [Microsoft][ODBC_SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets] SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Here's what I've tried: not a firewall issue: tried with firewall on SQL Server turned off, and client turned off. Also able to telnet 1433 from client and that works fine. not an access issue: I can login from many different computers, including the SQL Server itself using the account i'm using on client (using SQL Server authentication) i http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13405208/diagnosing-connection-to-sql-server can ping the hostname and IP address. (i've tried both) The only thing i can think of is that the client computer is windows server 2003, and has various roles setup: File Server Application Server Terminal Server Domain Controller DNS Server I don't know why these services are setup, but for the time being i can't shut them off. Would it be any of these, and if so, is there a way to disable any of the aspects of them, that might be blocking SQL. Any advise truly appreciated! sql-server connection odbc share|improve this question asked Nov 15 '12 at 20:00 russds 47211236 another thing: I'm able to create ODBC connections from other clients fine. It does appear that the problem lies with this particular client, either with the roles setup, or perhaps something else. Thanks! –russds Nov 15 '12 at 20:05 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted Found the issue. For some reason, even though SQL was not in use on the client, it was installed, and by going to All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server -> Client Network Utility, i found that the protocal TCP/IP was using port 4717. I have no idea why that port was in use, and even further, i'm not sure why it would even matter - I was just setting up an odbc connection, and not using sql server (on the client) at all. Either way, I changed this

Not open for further replies. Deepak Hi, I've been trying to run T-SQL script (with schema and data) on the remote database through the SQL Management Studio. So far, I have not made any progress. I keep getting the following error: TITLE: Connect to Server ------------------------------ Cannot connect to s02.Winhost.com. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?Prod...rver&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=53&LinkId=20476 -------------------------------- As I understand, I need to do some settings for the SQL Management Studio to work. So I referred the following articles for the same: 1. http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2009/0...ion-to-sql-server-microsoft-sql-server-error/ 2. http://www.linglom.com/2009/03/28/enable-remote-connection-on-sql-server-2008-express/ Which basically told me to enable SQL Server browser service, add firewall settings and so on. However, the problem persists. Is there any thing else that I need to do? Is there another way to export the T-SQL scripts to the remote db? Your SQL Management Studio is using Named Pipes to reach out over the Internet and connect to our server. This will not work. Named Pipes is not routable over the Internet. You will need to go to your SSMS configuration manager and make sure you connect to our SQL Server using TCP. 2. Another possible cause to this error is that s02.Winhost.com is not resolving to the IP address. It can caused by your firewall, proxy server, or just some corrupted table on your router. Also port 1433, which is the SQL port mayalso being blocked by these devices. To find out try running these tets. Go to your MS DOS prompt and type... ping s02.Winhost.com and then type... telnet s02.Winhost.com 1433 If you get a time out error with the ping test or if it shows a different IP address other then 96.31.35.202 then s02.Winhost.com is not resolving to our server correctly. Check with your network administrator about this. If you perform a telnet test and
