Joe Monday, October 01, 2007 12:21 PM Moderator 0 Sign in to vote Thanks for the answers guys. I tried every possible login to no avail. I ended up having to remove visual studio, sql server 2005 then .NET framwork. Then reinstalling in that order. Just removing/reinstalling SQL did not work. Took around 5 hours all up. Pretty soul destroying stuff but thems the breaks I guess. Tuesday, October 02, 2007 8:24 AM 1 Sign in to vote You could try first checking if the following protocols are enabled from the SQL Server Configuration Manager: 1. Named Pipes 2. TCP/IP Also, check from the Surface Area Configuration Manager to find out if your SQL Express Instance is configured to accept remote connections. 233 : No process at the other end of the pipe Written by belle Posted June 25, 2011 at 12:38 pm Just had an interesting error the http://www.sqlmusings.com/2011/06/25/connection-error-233-no-process-at-the-other-end-of-the-pipe/ other day. Got this error when trying to connect one of our http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/SQL-Server/microsoft.public.sqlserver.connect/2010-07/msg00003.html servers that has just been patched: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233) Typically, to troubleshoot this, you sql server go to SQL Server Configuration Manager (SSCM) and: 1. ensure Shared Memory protocol is enabled 2. ensure Named Pipes protocol is enabled 3. ensure TCP/IP is enabled, and s ahead of the Named Pipes in the settings Check out Pinal Dave's excellent post on this. All of these are set in our server. Next up, I checked the log files. Logs are sql server error typically located in a folder similar to this (note you will need to change the folder MSSQL.1 with the appropriate instance name's folder name): C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG When I checked the logs however, I got yet another interesting error: Could not connect because the maximum number of ‘1' user connections has already been reached. The system administrator can use sp_configure to increase the maximum value. The connection has been closed. [CLIENT: ] It's an interesting error because: 1. We just restarted the server and nobody is able to access it yet 2. DAC is disabled Solution After some more sleuthing and fiddling around, I went back to SSCM to check ensure the protocols are enabled properly. There's 4 (four) options - SharedMemory, TCP/IP, Named Pipes and VIA (for Virtual Interface Adapter). Everything is turned on, except for VIA. I enabled VIA protocol - and that did it. That was the issue. I would be interested in knowing what the problem was. I have documented some of the reasons in Books Online: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175496.aspx but these shouldn't occur when you make a local connection. More reasons would be nice to add to this topic. -- Rick Byham (MSFT) This posting is provided
