Sql Server Cluster Dependencies
393 SQL Server 2005 SP2 on a cluster node with two members. OS is Windows 2003 Server SP2. This the production environment. Test environment is not clustered. On the Cluster Administrator/Groups there are 2 groups defined for instances. Need to create db on an instance which has a group with 3 physical drives, U, V and W. When trying to msg 5184, level 16, state 2 create a new database the default location for data and log files uses the U drive by default. If I overwrite the file location to use the V drive for the log file to separate data and log file locations, the following error is displayed : " Cannot use file 'V:\..\..' for clustered server. Only formatted files on which the cluster resource of the server has a dependency can be used. Either the disk resource containing the file is not present in the cluster group or the cluster resource of the SQL server does not have a dependency on it. Create Database Failed. Some files names listed could not be created. Check related errors.(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5184)"The disk dive V is past of the group for that instance so do I need to create dependencies among the physical disks for this particular group? Any suggestions Post #411395 Tommy BollhoferTommy Bollhofer Posted Tuesday, October 16, 2007 2:06 PM Ten Centuries Group: General Forum Members Last Login: Thursday, August 18, 2016 5:39 AM Points: 1,160, Visits: 3,359 F

I install on thethird node on one instance http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic411395-149-1.aspx (which is not active) SP1 for sql 2008 R2. After installing I try to bring this instance active on this node. The instance comes online for a few second and fails then. In the sql server errorlog I can see the following errors: ERRORLOG: 2012-07-12 15:49:36.20 Logon Error: 18401, Severity: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/6030711f-0cf8-4ce2-8bc3-f14bdf92431c/sql-2008-r2-cluster-install-sp1-error-5184-severity-16-state-2?forum=sqlsetupandupgrade 14, State: 1. 2012-07-12 15:49:36.20 Logon Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM'. Only formatted files on which the cluster resource of the ser
the server has a dependency can be used. Last http://pradeepnagarajaiah.blogspot.com/2011/10/error-5184.html night we had a planned database file movement from http://blog.eight02.com/2011/04/create-database-failed-with-clustered.html a slower disk to a new faster disk. This database is on a two node cluster. I was informed all actions pertaining to cluster were already taken care off. All I had in my plate was to detach the sql server database, move the relevant files over to the new disk and attach it back. I detached, I moved the file, so far so good. I tried to attach the files, after pointing to the new locations. This is when I received this error 5184. The error message was self cannot use file explanatory and I figured that the disk was not added to the dependencies list for SQL server service in the cluster group. So to achieve this, I took the SQL service offline from cluster administrator, and included the new disk in the dependency list from the properties page of the SQL server service. Then proceeded to start the SQL server, and tried attaching the database. And it succeeded this time. 2008 instance? Getting the following error message? Cannot use file 'D:\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\myDatabase.mdf' for clustered server. Only formatted files on which the cluster resource of the server has a dependency can be used. Either the disk resource containing the file is not present in the cluster group or the cluster resource of the Sql Server does not have a dependency on it. CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors. If so, you forgot to configure the disk dependency in Failover Cluster Manager! SQL prevents you from creating databases on volumes which aren't a dependency of the SQL Server resource. This is to prevent situations where SQL Server comes online before the disk containing the database which would lead to a "I can't see the database!" error from SQL. To remediate this, simply add the dependency. Open Failover Cluster Manager Select your clustered application Right-click on your SQL Server resource then click Properties. Click on the Dependencies tab. Click the Insert button to add an additional row, then select the shared disk that contains your SQL databases. Ensure that all resources are required (there is an AND next to subsequent resources) then click OK.
