The ironic thing is, there is no password. Steps are: Right click on the Service in the Services mmc Click Properties Click on the Log On tab The password fields will appear to have entries in them... Blank out both Password fields Click "OK" This should re-grant access to the service and it should start up again. Weird?

How can I resolve the error 'An error 1069 - (The service did not start due to a logon failure)' for SQL Server? Dec 23, 1999 Neil Pike | Windows IT Pro EMAIL Tweet Comments 17 Advertisement A. SQL Server is just like any other NT service in that it can be defined to run using http://windowsitpro.com/windows/how-can-i-resolve-error-error-1069-service-did-not-start-due-logon-failure-sql-server the credentials of an NT user account. It can also run under localsystem account, but if you are getting this error then you must have defined a user account. Related: Automate detection of Logon failure in a domain environment Go to control panel/services. Choose the mssqlserver service (or SQLExecutive/SQLAgent if they are failing) and then choose startup. Check what NT account is being used. Make sure that the password is correct and check with NT user manager that the account has not been deleted or expired. If the account details seem ok, then check that it has "logon as a service" user right (again with user manager). If this doesn't resolve the issue then try logging on locally to the NT box with the same NT account and see what error(s) you get. Symptom When you are starting SQL Server via SQL Server Enterprise Manager or MSSQLServer Services application in the Control Panel, it generates this error:
An error 1069. (The service did not start due to a logon failure) occurred while performing this service operation on the MSSQLServer Services. Cause The password for the SQL Server startup service account is incorrect as it was probably changed. The account is a regular user account within the domain, and many times it must adhere to the same password expiration policies. However, given its specific use, changing the password should be coordinated with making the change for the service also. Resolving the problem You need to update the password in the Microsoft SQL Server service account on the SQL Server host computer. To correct the password in Microsoft Windows 2000 Server: Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services. Double-click MSSQLSERVER, and then click the Log On tab. Type the correct password in the Password and Confirm password textbox, and then click OK. To correct the password in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0: Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Services, and then double-click MSSQLSERVER. Type the correct password in the Password and Confirm password textbox, and then click OK. Note: After changing the SQL Server service account information in Control Panel, click Start to begin the SQL Server service. The SQL Server service account in SQL Server Enterprise Manager will also automatically start.
