about SQL Server log files, you might think first of the transaction log, which records recent database transactions and is used to ensure database integrity in the event of a system restore. However, many other log sql server transaction log file location files also help to diagnose and troubleshoot problems. Here are five log files that play important roles in SQL Server 2005. Update: SQL Server Log Files (2014) 5. SQL Server Setup Log You might already be familiar with the SQL Server 2005 Setup log, which is located at %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt. If the summary.txt log file shows a component failure, you can investigate the root cause by looking at the component’s log, sql server log function which you’ll find in the %Program-Files%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files directory. 4. SQL Server Profiler Log SQL Server Profiler, the primary application-tracing tool in SQL Server 2005, captures the system’s current database activity and writes it to a file for later analysis. You can find the Profiler logs in the log .trc file in the %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG directory. Related: DBAs and SQL Server Logs 3. SQL Server Agent Log SQL Server 2005’s job scheduling subsystem, SQL Server Agent, maintains a set of log files with warning and error messages about the jobs it has run, written to the %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG directory. SQL Server will maintain up to nine SQL Server Agent error log files. The current log file is named SQLAGENT .OUT, whereas archived files are numbered sequentially. You can view SQL Server Agent logs by using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). Expand a server node, expand Management, click SQL Server Logs, and select the check box for SQL Server Agent. 2. Windows Event Log An important source of information for troubleshooting SQL Server errors, the Windows Event log contains three useful logs. The application log records events in SQL Server and SQL Server Agent and can be used by SQL Server IntegrationServices (SSIS) packages. The security log records authentication information, and the system log records ser

SERVER - Where is ERRORLOG? Various Ways to Find ERRORLOG Location March 24, 2015Pinal DaveSQL Tips and Tricks9 commentsWhenever someone reports some weird error on my blog comments or sends email to know about it, I always ask to share SQL Server ERRORLOG file. There have http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2015/03/24/sql-server-where-is-errorlog-various-ways-to-find-its-location/ been many occasions where I need to guide them to find location of ERRORLOG file generated by SQL Server. Most DBA’s are intelligent and know some of these, but this is my try to share my http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/77510/sql-server-2008-r2-log-file-location learning about ERRORLOG location.I decided to write this blog so that I can reuse it rather than sending steps every time. At this point I must point out that even if the name says ERRORLOG, sql server it contains not only the errors but information message also. Here are various ways to find the SQL Server ErrorLog location.A) If SQL Server is running and we are able to connect to SQL Server then we can do various things. So we can connect to SQL Server and run xp_readerrorlog. USE MASTER GO EXEC xp_readerrorlog 0, 1, N'Logging SQL Server messages in file' GO If you can’t remember above command sql server error just run xp_readerrorlog and find the line which says “Logging SQL Server messages”. B) If we are not able to connect to SQL Server then we should SQL Server Configuration Manager use. We need to find startup parameter starting with -e. Below is the place in SQL Server Configuration Manager (SQL 2012 onwards) where we can see them.C) If you don’t want to use both ways, then here is the little unknown secret. The ERRORLOG is one of startup parameters and its values are stored in registry key and here is the key in my server. SQLArg1 shows parameter starting with -e parameters which point to Errorlog file. Here is the key which I highlighted in the image: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQLServer\Parameters\Note that “MSSQL12.SQL2014” would vary based on SQL Server Version and instance name which is installed. Here is the quick table with version referenceSQL Server VersionKey NameSQL Server 2008MSSQL10SQL Server 2008 R2MSSQL10_50SQL Server 2012MSSQL11SQL Server 2014MSSQL12In SQL Server 2005, we would see a key name in the format of MSSQL.n (like MSSQL.1) the number n would vary based on instance ID.Here is a key where we can get mapping of Instance ID and directory. In the above image, you can see that this computer has a default instance (Instance Name MSSQLSERVER) of SQL Server 20

The drive which the log file is pointing to does not exist. But I don't see any error in database error log because of this. Is there a default location for SQL server log file when the log file path is not set right? If this were the case you could log onto the server using that same service account used by SQL Server, and "see" the drive in Windows Explorer. SQL Server will refuse to load a database if it cannot locate a valid log file. It will NOT simply create the log file in the "default" Log file location. An alternate method to see if the log file really exists, and perhaps where it actually is, would be to use the xp_cmdshell extended stored procedure to run a dir command on the SQL Server itself, in the context of the service account. This relies on having exec sp_configure 'xp_cmdshell' being set to 1. If xp_cmdshell is enabled, you could run the following: EXEC xp_cmdshell 'DIR C:\temp\*.ldf'; --replace with the path to the log file in question EXEC xp_cmdshell 'net use'; -- this shows the mapped network dr
