Error message is: The file exists. Restarting SSMS didn't help. Neither did rebooting the machine. The only thing I found on Google was someone saying "report the bug to microsoft" :P (Windows XP Pro x64, SSMS 2005) sql-server ssms share|improve this question edited May 12 '15 at 13:33 Dylan Corriveau 2,08531733 asked Apr 21 '10 at 14:17 adambox 8,11162432 example queries? –David Apr 21 '10 at 14:19 1 uninstall and reinstall the client the directory name tools... –Mitch Wheat Apr 21 '10 at 14:22 any query at all! I installed sysInternals process monitor tool to try and work out which file was causing the issue. The answer is temp files. Both SQL server management studio and toad use a similar naming convention for their temp files. Both use the temp directory under your user account in Documents and Settings. In my case, there were over 60 thousand *.tmp files in that directory. Watching the query execute through process monitor I could see the SQL IDE continually trying and failing to identify a temp file name which didn't exist until it finally gives up with a "The file exists" error. The solution is simply to clear out the *.tmp files in your local settings temp directory. Both SQL Management Studio and Toad for MySQL are now working fine on my machine. Hope this helps. share|improve this answer answered Jun 18 '10 at 9:
May 2, 2012 by AnupWarrier Today I opened SSMS in one of my SQL 2005 box,and to my surprise I got this error right away “The file C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\%version%\mscorlib.tlb could not be loaded.” I was running SQL 2005 SP3 (Yes,you heard it right !) and the only .NET framework which was installed on the box was .NET 2.0. I went ahead to check the folder C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework and to my surprise I found that the folder framework is missing ! How did that happen ? Before I get into identifying what caused this to happen,I had to fix the problem with SSMS.SSMS should be opened directly from the server ( I agree that its not a good practice, however the situation demanded it) I decided to try my luck with repairing .NET framework as this was one of the options I had.I went ahead and did the repair of .NET framework 2.0 from Add/Remove options. The repair just went smooth and I could see the missing files/ folders getting created again while the setup was running. SSMS just launched perfect and the issue was fixed. Conclusion You can also do this repair in case you face similar issue.I will be focusing on why this corruption happened during the coming days and will update the same post in case I get some hints. Thanks for reading and keep repairing ! Share this:TweetPrintEmailLike this:Like Loading... Related This entry was posted in General. Bookmark the permalink.
