where to turn and when i ask my other expert friends they do not have any idea. Here is some background: The Database / Server / Network We are running a fairly small database which is about 400mb in size. The server is SBS2008 with SQL Server 2008 and exchange (6 mailboxes)

on it. The server is an I7 920 with 16GB of DDR3 Ram which is ultilised at only 70% during busy times while the CPU is being use at 20% at busy times. 1.5TB of storage space in a 4 Drive 500gb RAID5 setup. All clients are running on Gigabit LAN (with Gigabit switch, ect) and are running AMD 9650 Quad Cores with 2GB DDR2 Ram. Only about 150gb of HDD space is used out of the 1.5tb. The Problem Everything on the server works perfectly, the hardware is a little over a year old and has been running great. In-fact everything works and has been working great up untiltwo weeks ago. Basically, when the user on the database application prints an invoice, and the query is run to fetch the invoice information, the machine will Hang for 30 seconds and have the Error [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expired. About every ten minutes or so, we are getting a few errors: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expired [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]ConnectionRead() This is timeout expired in happening on more than a dozen different computers at random times. We also have IP phones that all run through the same network and those are not having any problems. We can also VNC into a users computer and reproduce the error they were getting, but VNC still continues to work. Email also works. It just seems to be an ODBC connection to SQL Server that causes the issue. The errors happen for both of our SQL Servers. We have scoured google, but haven't been able to come up with a solution. Is there anything we can try to diagnose the problem? Is there any fix out there? Update: We have no internal firewalls on either the servers or clients. We connect through TCP/IP via the dns name of the server (also have tried IP address). One server has Windows 2003 SP2 and the other doesn't. The strange thing is that it has worked fine for years and now all of a sudden these errors are happening. Nothing has changed on those servers for quite some time. That leads us to beleive it is a bad switch, but that seems unlikely since nothing else (email, phon

This doesn't seem to work for ODBC connections though. Specifically, we made the decision to use the standard SQL Server ODBC driver that ships with Windows XP (SQLSRV32.DLL version 2000.85.1132.00) instead of the newer SQL Native Client and it is with this driver that the connection always times out on 15 seconds, irrespective of the Connect Timeout setting. Also, when it times out, I get two errors. The first is the timeout and the second is "Invalid connection string attribute" so I guess Connect Timeout is not what I need. The final clue that I'm missing the plot, came from this somewhat dated article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms811006.aspx Does anyone know if there is a way to specifiy the connection timeout in the connection string for the standard SQL Server ODBC driver? sql-server odbc connection-string share|improve this question asked Feb 22 '10 at 8:34 Cobus Kruger 2,07222356 You know that there are 2 timeout related properties: ConnectionTimeout and CommandTimeout? Do you really have a problem when establishing a connection or already when executing a query? –van Feb 22 '10 at 8:45 The timeout occurs when establishing the connection through a VPN connection through DSL. Sometimes the connection happens quick enough and then the app is actually perfectly usable. But mostly
