A few days ago the database has been migrated to SQL Server 2008 R2 and I need to update the .ini file to redirect the new production server. I updated the connection string as follow: CONNECTION_NAME = "Provider=SQLNCLI10.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog="CatalogName";Data Source="Production_DNS"" But I'm getting the following error: Named Pipe Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [53] Additional notes: Production DNS is working perfectly in other IT areas and other apps are reaching the server without troubles. I'm trying to connect from dev box. The application is an inherited implementation with several years, that's why the *.ini file needs to be kept around. I've some hours browsing internet for error details with almost no results. Does the new connection string seems correct?. Any idea of what can be generating the error? Recommendations? Thanks in advance, sql-server-2008 connection-string named-pipes sql-server-config-manager s

My connection url is like jdbc:jtds:sqlserver://localhost:1433/dbname;user=username;password=password However I get the above mentioned exception when I try to execute a stored procedure through prepared statement I have enabled TCP/IP and Named pipes. I have disabled firewall. What could be the issue. I found out it was because the following error occurs "ole/db provider returned message login timeout expired"... http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15152107/named-pipes-provider-could-not-open-a-connection-to-sql-server-53 but not sure why this happens sql-server sql-server-2008 share|improve this question edited Mar 1 '13 at 7:45 asked Mar 1 '13 at 6:46 Anand B 63941638 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted The linked server was configured with wrong authentication values. Hence when I tried to connect to the linked server it threw authentication exception which in turn throws above mentioned exception. Creating a linked server with proper authentication values fixed the issue. share|improve this answer answered Mar 1 '13 at 12:49 Anand B 63941638 Hi, I'm having a similar problem, could you explain what you mean by "proper authentification values"? I tried several different parameters and the linked server still cannot connect –NaturalBornCamper Jun 14 '13 at 0:40 Proper authentication values refers to valid remote login username and password details of the database to which linked connection is to be made –Anand B Jun 14 '13 at 7:46 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote I had the same problem, maybe the problem is related with DNS. I fixed the problem creating the linked server with the IP Address instead of the server's name. share|improve this answer answered Jul 22 '13 at 16:30 George 112 a

Thanks, N P Thursday, July 31, 2008 6:44 PM Reply | Quote Answers 0 sql server Sign in to vote Hi N P, Error 53 is an OS error which maps to ERROR_BAD_NETPATH (The network path was not found). Depending on how you setup your linked server, a connection from the current SQL Server process to the remote one will be attempted. Due to the nature of the error, could not open it seems to be attempted with Named Pipes protocol and some of the OS calls (like CreatePipe for instance) returns the OS error 53. In most of the cases this is related to the network name resolution of the remote server or it might be permissions-related, e.g. if your current SQL Server instance is running under Local System account (which doesn't have network access privileges). Please see the detailed description on how to setup a linked server in the SQL Server Books Online, but to start you could try the following: (a) Examine your current SQL Server service account (the local instance - the one where you are trying to setup the linked server to the remote machine). Depending on the authentication configured for the linked server, you might need to use an account which has network access. You could examine the service account using Management Studio or Configuration Manager (b) Check the network name of the rem

Both servers are on Windows 2005 with MS SQL Server 2003 SP3. OLE DB provider "SQL-IDA" for linked server "SQL-IDB" returned message "Login timeout expired". OLE DB provider "SQL-IDA" for linked server "SQL-IDB" returned message "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.". Msg 53, Level 16, State 1, Line 0 Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [53]. It seems to suggest that SQL-IDA cannot find the network path to SQL-IDB. We've followed the steps in this article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;914277 but it did not resolve our issue. Is it possible that the MSDTC dynamic port range should be set to a specific range on both servers? Any help is greatly appreciated. There are possible reasons to error 53: a) typo in the server name, or using "/" rather than "\" between server name and instance name, e.g. "myserver/myinst" is not correct. b) name resolution to the server name is not correct, "ping -a yourserver" would tell if that's the case c) The server machine is firewall'ed and file sharing is not in the exception list.
