On a side note, if you do not know what the SQL Browser is or how it works, the short story is as follows. When SQL 2005 Server sql server error 11 starts, a TCP/IP port is assigned to it. This is so that you can have several instances of SQL Server on the same machine. So in order to be able to serve the clients that tries to connect to these different instances, the SQL Browser steps in as a ‘lookup' service. So you specify

Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 17 [Microsoft][ODBC_SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets] SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Here's what I've tried: not a firewall issue: tried with firewall on SQL Server turned off, and client turned off. Also able to telnet 1433 from client and that works fine. not an http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13405208/diagnosing-connection-to-sql-server access issue: I can login from many different computers, including the SQL Server itself using the account i'm using on client (using SQL Server authentication) i can ping the hostname and IP address. (i've tried both) The only thing i can think of is that the client computer is windows server 2003, and has various roles setup: File Server Application Server Terminal Server Domain Controller DNS Server I don't know why these services are setup, but for the time being i can't shut them off. Would it be any of these, and if so, is there a way to disable any of the aspects of them, that might be blocking SQL. Any advise truly appreciated! sql-server connection odbc share|improve this question asked Nov 15 '12 at 20:00 russds 47211236 another thing: I'm able to create ODBC connections from other clients fine. It does appear that the problem lies with this particular client, either with the roles setup, or perhaps something else. It would be useful to upgrade your SQL Server towards SQL Server 2008 R2 ( the direct jump to SQL Server 2012 is impossible ).Usually , when I have a problem of connection to a SQL Server , I am searching the answer in the SQL Server Protocols Bloghttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/ where I find quickly a solution to my problem. But you are using SQL Server 2000 and I have noticed a little sentence which could make more difficult to find the solution"One of the more visible changes we made in connectivity space for SQL Server 2005 was enhancing error messages reported to the user in case of connection failures"- SQL Browser is not existing before SQL Server 2005 which makes less easy the remote connectionssee http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2005/09/22/473111.aspx andhttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2005/09/22/473111.aspxhttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2005/09/28/474698.aspxSome useful links :http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2006/09/30/sql-server-2005-remote-connectivity-issue-troubleshooting.aspxhttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_protocols/archive/2006/02/21/536201.aspxEven if these articles were written for SQL Server 2005 and over , some ideas they provided could be useful for youA last thing : which is the last service pack i
